I believe the name of (Daduck F Devaughn), that is listed for our Grandfather, was a mistake by the census taker when they wrote down the name. Should have written as (Zedock F DeVaughn). I base this on what the name looks like on the 1870 Sunflower,Miss.,census form.

Ten years later (Rich and A. J Devon), appear in the 1880 census of Independence, Co. Ark. Another mistake by census takers.

The Boll Weevil Infestation Zedock Freeman Richard DeVaughn was living in White River, Arkansas, in 1900 when the boll weevil devastated nearby cotton fields. The boll weevil is an insect,” the blues song goes. “And he’s found mostly where cotton grows.” By 1915, the devastating boll weevil had eaten its way through much of the American South’s cotton crop. The “wave of evil” proved to be a costly nuisance for southern farmers. Ineffective government-sponsored measures drove locals to turn to folk remedies in hopes of protecting their lucrative crop. While some sprayed their fields with ash, others drowned the swarming beetles in kerosene. With females laying 200 eggs every 10 days, these insect-fighting attempts failed miserably. Between 1914 and 1917, cotton production was down 70 percent in Alabama alone. Southern agriculture took a huge hit and its labor force, mostly African American sharecroppers, found themselves out of work. Tens of thousands headed North in a mass exodus named the Great Migration. By the 1920s, though the beetles had almost disappeared, their infestation had lasting effects on southern agriculture. Farmers began diversifying their crops to include other staples like corn and wheat. Media Gallery INDEX:ZOOMIN
