About don Clement Sumić

Don Clement Sumic was a Catholic priest and Canon at Makarska. He was one of the first teachers in the newly established public school system here. Clement was recommended for the position by his trusted colleague Canon Josip Pavlovic Lucic, who helped establish the school with the help of two Franciscans who were paid 144 Florin, while Clement received 160 Florins from the public fund of Makarska. Clement even held classes in his house. The Census of 1802 (Stanja Dusa) in Makarska shows two pupils living at Clement's house: 12 year old Mate Gabric and and 12 year old Mate Kovacevic. In 1841 the official records of the Makarska diocesis list the four Canon positions at the time: Josip Grubisic, Clement Sumic, Ivan Zaric, and the fourth Canon position listed as "vacant (exerpted from "Rodoslovlje Sumic-Podgora" by Drago Sumic (1999).
