Arrived in United States on the "Main" from Breman Germany in New York on January 24, 1883, he was 25 years old and came alone. He came over in the steerage section. On the New York passenger list, his name was "Stingreibel". Joseph's occupation was a bricklayer in Bavaria, Germany according to the National Archives database (AAD, Manifest #37119.. When Joseph signed his name on his naturalization papers, he spelled his name "Steingruber". In the 1892-94 directory in St. Paul, Minnesota, he is listed as a laborer for the John Boldhen Company. He became a citizen on December 30, 1897. In the 1885 St. Paul city directory he is listed as a laborer. In 1889 he worked for the John Boldthen Company at a quarry at St. Clair & Onieda. In the 1894 directory he now is a teamster working for the Milton T. Emory Coal & Wood Company. Joseph is buried in Calvery Cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota. Minnesota Death Record 1910MN021381. On 1885 census, name is Stingribble.
