He was called to the Irish Bar in 1841. As a founding member of the Young Ireland movement he was arrested after the 1848 rebellion even though he opposed the rebellion, convicted of High Treason, sentenced to death. British Government advised Queen Victoria to commute sentence to transportation to Tasmania. He escaped to France then US where he served the New York Bar. Returned to Ireland on amnesty 1855 and became an MP in 1865 for Tipperary.

John Blake Dillon was born in 1816. He was the son of Luke Dillon and Anne Blake. He married Adelaide Hart, daughter of William Hart. he died 15 September 1866, from cholera.
He was educated at Maynooth. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland. He was joint founder (with Thomas Davis and Charles Gavin Duffy) of The Nation in 1841. He was admitted to King's Inns in 1841 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law. He was a journalist on the Morning Register. He was a prominent member of the Repeal Party and Young Ireland Party. In 1848 he led rebels at Mullinahone during the insurrection (afterwards fleeing to France and USA with a price of three hundred pounds sterling on his head). He was a practicing Barrister at New York City, New York, USA. In 1855 he returned to Dublin after the amnesty. He was joint founder (with Martin and The O'Donoghue) and Secretary of the National Association. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Tipperary in 1865.

John Blake caught cholera and died on Saturday, September 15th at 8:20 PM. This from page 173 of the O' Cathoir biography. He died in Killiney, County Dublin, not Killarney, County Kerry. The family home was in Killiney. |
