"Jonathan Osbourne" and "Greta Holman" were invented by a genealogist. The siblings whose parents / origins are not identified are: Ephraim, Caleb, Enoch, Solomon, and Jonathan.

Pioneer Settlers of Grayson Co, Va by BF Nuckolls (1914) p. 171: "Esq Enoch Osborne settled on New River near Bridle Creek; this for many years was known as the Osborne settlement Enoch Osborne had 3 brothers, Solomon, Ephraim, and Jonathan, who came to this country with their rfamilies about the same time and settled on New River near together
Kaleb Osborne and his five brothers came to the U.S. from England. [SIC: we don't know where] One of Kaleb's sons was Stephen Osborne b. Abt. 1744 d. 1817 married Comfort Langham b.Abt. 1744
Ephraim, Sr. and his brother Caleb migrated from New Jersey to the Yadkin Valley area of North Carolina around 1750. Caleb died in Rowan County before August 7, 1781. Caleb Osborne had at least seven children. Several of the sons moved to the Clinch Valley area of Russell and Scott Counties, Virginia At least one son moved on to Indiana.

Ephraim Osborne, the patriarch of the Osborne families in the New River valley and three of his sons, Enoch, Jonathan, and Robert along with Ephraim's brother Stephen were members of the Herbert company. This family came to the New River valley very early (1765 or 6) from the Yadkin River valley (i.e. the "Jersey Settlement" in Rowan Co., NC).
Before North Carolina, their origin is more obscure, but Rita Sutton says that family legends place them as from New Jersey. Their naming pattern is quite consistent with the New Jersey Osborne family that originated in Connecticut and before that in England [see John Osborne] but the connection to this family has not been established. It is possible that they instead are more recent immigrants from England or Scotland or Ireland who migrated to North Carolina from Pennsylvania (Charles Osborne hypothesis). It is now believed that the supposed connection to a Jonathan Osborne and a Greta Holman is a genealogical hoax played on a customer by a "professional" genealogist sometime before World War II, and propagated like wild-fire via the internet. In fact we know the names of the parties involved in the hoax.

Myrtle Greer Johnson (who is unfortunately now deceased), told me the scoop on the Jamestown Osborne connections. Will Daniels, in good faith, hired a professional genealogist in the 1930s/1940s to trace his family, and this fellow who is also dead, every one is dead This fellow invented the line beyond Ephraim out of thin air. Mr. Daniels in his excitement shared the file widely, but he discovered his error, but too late, the cat was out of the bag. Mr. Daniels did lots of good stuff, and I hold no ill will about this whatsoever But the Jonathan Osborn stuff has taken on a life of its own. ...
However, attempts to find the source records for Jamestown failed, as there are simply none to find.
The only source I can find for the alleged Jamestown connection was a bit of creative writing done by one researcher back in the 1940s. Dozens of people have informed me that Jonathan was Ephraim's father, but nary a person has been able to offer any evidence of that claim. Every such claim, if it can be traced at all, seems to go back to that 1940s creation and evaporate there.

Jonathan and his parents emigrated to Virginia on the ship James Goodwill, arriving Oct., 1720. This came from a post on NGS on 6/24/94 from Carole Spencer....Waterloo, Iowa.

NOW, the family that migrated to the US from Ashford, Kent, England. They came on the ship "HECTOR". First to New Haven Conn., Migrating to Long Island, New York. They were Tanners for 6 generations

Information on local BB tied to NGS on 7/10/94 from _ suggests that "James Osborn was born Warwick, England 1675; he and son, Jonathan, migrated to Somerset Co., Maryland. James was a schoolmaster. Family later migrated to New Jersey where James lives the rest of his life. Jonathan named one of his sons, Jonathan , Jr.

Jonathan Osborn, Jr., married in New Jersey. Children were Stephen 1745; Solomon Ephraim Osborn 1746; 9soldier in 1775 War), James, Thomas, several more kids. Some of the family stayed in NJ, but about 1753, Jonathan and other kids named above migrated south to South Carolina where Stephen Osborn married Comfort Langham in 1765.

Some of the clan remained in SC, but Jonathan, Ephraim, Thomas,Stephen, and their families moved to North Carolina and settled in Surry Co., NC , on Yadkin River across from Old Boonesville (first home of Daniel Boone). They were there as early as 1767. It was here that Solomon Ephraim Osborn married Elizabeth Howard.

Solomon E. Osborn and Elizabeth Howard's kids were Encoh (in 1776 was Captain in war), Robert James, Jonathan 13 Feb., 1752, in Rowan Co. , NC (1776 War soldier).

Other information received from Lucille Muncy Carter from Eubank, Kentucky, shows that they family emigrated to Virginia on the ship James Goodwill arriving Oct. , 1720.

Death dates and burial place are unknown. No list of other children. The compiler believes this family may have come to colonies as indentured servants.

Alta and Forrest's only daughter was Barbara June Johnston b. 1932 in Kansas City, Kansas, married Jack Kelly Ramsey, b. 1928 in Green Forest, Arkansas.
