Does anyone have more info on this man??? There is a major issue with his name--is it John or William??? Everything I have found on this man indicates it should be William NOT John. When I first started working on this branch (he is my 7th ggf) I had a problem because there was a conflict with his name. I had numerous sources that said it was William who was the son of Hugh & Catherine (Scott) Montgomery and was married to Isabel Burnett, so went ahead and entered all that I found on William in this profile. I wasn't up to him at that time to "prove" that it was William NOT John. (I like to make sure that all info is as accurate as possible before moving back in time.) Now I am up to him and wanted to get his name "fixed". I messed up when I initially asked Erica to fix his name & gave her only variations of John as options--My brain must have been somewhere else!!!

There are now several profiles with William as the first name and this one with John which I believe are for the same man. I would like to get his name "fixed" so we are all on the same page and merging can be done.

Does anyone have any info on the Maj John Montgomery of Scots Army which is the name that was on this profile before???

Please check all of the info I have provided on William (of America of Brigend) Montgomery. Check out 27th generation @ http://www.angelfire.com/ca/dhowe/montgomery.html I believe all of the info I have added to his profile supports the assertion that his name should be William, not John.

I don't find any documentation indicating that he was in the Scots Army. I did find at least one Maj John Montgomery that was, but the personal info for him doesn't match this man--different parents, place of birth, wife, children, etc.

I hope someone will be able to help clear this up so we all know who we are talking about.

Thanks for any/all help in clearing up this "mess".

The first issue I see is geographic.

Maybole Parish, (city of)? Ayr, Ayrshire is not the same as "Brigend" (which is possibly not the same place defined as "an island in the inner Hebrides).

So find Maybole Parish.
Find Brigend.

And you will be a step closer to understanding if there was a John Montgomery brother of William.

You're going to need to go into Scots resources and not rely on other on line trees also.

4/4/14: Found that there is a castle Brigend in Maybole Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland!!!/ps
http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Brigend,_Maybole,_Ayershire,_Scotland

Brigend was the family home of one branch of the Montgomery's that left Scotland about 1702, to settle in Monmouth, New Jersey.

Brigend, or Bridgend as formerly spelt, is in the Parish of Maybole, Ayrshire, and situated immediately on the banks of the river Doon, about one fourth of a mile below, and on the opposite side to Alloway Kirkyard. It was known as Nether Auchindraine, previously to the building (in the year 1466) of the "Old Bridge of Doon" so celebrated in " Tam O'Shanter." Abercrummie, who wrote prior to the Revolution, speaks of it "as a pretty dwelling, surrounded also with gardens, orchards, and parks;" but of this pretty dwelling scarcely a vestige now remains. From the ruins, however, which are now in existence, it seems to have consisted of a small tower, having a few houses probably attached, and no doubt surrounded by a moat. And the marriage settlement of William's son, dated in 1626, speaks of the "Land of Nether Auchindraine with tour, fortallice, maner place, yairdis, orchardis"'

Judy, do you have ANY info on this man???? We are looking for info that will help determine if this man should be named John or William. And if John, we have a potential headache as all of the "personal" info at the top fits for William Montgomery.

Pat

My "personal" feeling so far is that you've been tracking upward and you are led to a William Montgomery, son of Hugh.

So the question really is - did William have a brother John who also emigrated to America? If so, "his" details need to be found so he is no longer confused with your ancestor (that's the MP tool)

In other words - if the (theoretical) Maj John Montgomery has no descent line, we can re name the profile to William. But that "needs to be ascertained" before we can progress.

Erica, from what I have found on Hugh & Katherine (Scott) Montgomery, I do not see a john mentioned. John entered the pix thru this profile.

Here is another site (in the present Maj John's About section)

From: http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Transcript:Lineage_of_William_Montgome...
Transcript: Lineage of William Montgomery, of Brigend, Ayrshire, and Monmouth, NJ
Note: Footnotes have been elided, but contain sources, and some useful information. The original should be examined for these materials.
• William Montgomerie of Brigend, [Hugh Montgomery's] eldest son, married January 8, 1684, in Edinburgh, Isabel, daughter of Robert Burnett of Letliiutie, Aberdeenshire, of the family of the Leys Burnetts, of which was Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury. Their marriage settlement is in complete preservation, and measures six feet in length. On his marriage he had sasine of the " five pound land of Bangour," recorded at Ayr, May 28, 1684. (Par. Reg. Ayrs., vol. v. f. 68.)'

This site does mention a cousin, John Montgomerie of Beoch.

Will keep looking for more sites with info about his father, Hugh Montgomery to see if there is a John anywhere...

Here is another site that lists the children for Hugh & Catherine (Scott) Montgomery:

Erica,
Ian Winton added info in the Sources tab for:
Captain,Major John William Montgomery Immigrated to America, was wounded at The Battle of the Boyne in Ireland.

I think he is connected to Viscount Hugh Montgomery, not this branch. The DOB, POB and spouse are all different from those in this profile. Is there a profile for Viscount Hugh Montgomery and his family??? Whenever I have attempted to search for someone in Geni, it may/may not bring up the person but it always brings up "try Pro membership" and I haven't been able to go beyond. Don't know if I am doing something wrong or if searching Geni for people is not a Basic benefit...
Pat

So it looks like we would need a John Montgomery.

9/22/2014 at 8:42 AM

There is a Margaret Dunbar Montgomery b. 1665 that would be about right, but can't access her profile to see who is attached to her. This is the wife of the Maj. John Montgomery that is mentioned in the info that is in this John's "Source" tab.

There is some info in the About section here that would go to the John attached to Margaret as well as the info in the "Source" section. Then this profile could be changed to William as everything fit for him. I'm not sure if there is other info that would need to go to a "new" profile or not. (Think there were 2 bits at least.)

9/22/2014 at 8:56 AM

I went a different way to get to Margaret Dunbar Montgomery & her profile is at: Margaret Montgomery
There is no Husband connected to her at her profile but John is mentioned in her About section.

I have made a note for the 2 "bits" of info that would go with him & her (which can be eliminated when transferred to the right place...)

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Family:John_Montgomery_and_Margaret_Du...
Maj. John Montgomery, Scots Army

Found him... but he goes with Margaret not Isabella... Needs his own profile connected to Margaret.

Here is another site that has info on Major John Montgomery with direct quote of info & another person's genealogy for him:

http://books.google.com/books?id=-xEwAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA223&lpg=...
• Ancestral Records and Portraits: A Compilation from the Archives ..., Volume 1
By Colonial Dames of America. Chapter I, Baltimore (pg 222-223)

The last is it.

So two profiles "were" mismerged, Pat - John & William.

9/22/2014 at 3:04 PM

The next step is to find the parents of John Montgomery of the Battle of the Boyne (Major Hugh Montgomery & ??)

An easy way to do this whole operation:

- Margaret Montgomery

-- from tree view, make a new profile for John Montgomery as her husband with the right dates etc
-- make "sure" the children are correctly assigned to this pair
-- then go back and add the parents of John Montgomery. If you can find "This" Hugh's wife, add a "placeholder" profile named "mother of Maj. John Montgomery.

Hopefully the match to an existing (correct) Hugh will turn up quickly.

Ensure the children assigned to William don't belong to John & vice versa ... Chances are they got all mixed up

Let me know when done so I can MP & lock everything up & add curator notes

Very nice work, Pat.

We now have two separated families

Maj. John Montgomery who married Margaret Dunbar

And no known relation to
William Montgomery who married Isabelle Burnett

No middle names in use in this period.

Again, very nice work on the overviews.

Can he be from this line.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hessilhead

Sir John Montgomerie of Hessilhead and Corsecraigs inherited the estate from his father, Hugh Montgomerie of Bawgraw (Balgray). John was slain at the battle of Flodden in 1513 and the estate passed to his son Hugh, who died on 23 January 1556. Hugh's heir was his son John who was appointed one of the tutors to Hugh, third Earl of Eglintoun. John married Margaret Fraser of Knock and was succeed in 1558 by his son Hugh. This young Hugh was a member of the Convention Parliament of 1560, at which the Protestant Confession of Faith was established.

Bill - we have two separate Hugh Montgomery's (father of William & the other is the father of John).

There's a good source from Private User attached to the father of John.

Examine carefully to see if it aligns with "which" family.

Property is crucial ....
