Henry was born Henry Buie, but apparently became enamoured of James Bowie of Alamo fame, so decided to change the spelling of our last name to convince folks that we were related somehow to James Bowie, which research proves to be false.

Hi, I have same issues with court documents listing our George w Bowie as Buie. Our great great had more than likely received two land bounty warrants of 160 acres each for his service in the Mexico war from 1846-1848 an was to get oy one. Being he had some schooling in Law he started using different ages an initials in the various censuses from 1850 on. Also allot of the problem was how it was spoken. Bo-We or Bu-we in court documents. I never trust what the courts write down but more in his signature
