James P Sturgis was a very favoured associate of my 3rd great grandfather, Robert Edwards who had the 3 Imperial Hong in Macao and ran the ferries Sylph, St George and Union up to Canton. He was an auctioneer and warehouse merchant. He must have admired James very much because he made him executor of his will and I think left him his merchandise. He also named my 2nd great grandfather after him - James Sturgis Edwards.
I note that James P Sturgis died en route home in 1851; Robert died in Macao in 1847 aged 54, he was a widower with one son James S who eventually emigrated to Australia in approx 1857 and that is where I live.
I thought someone may be interested in a small part of the social history of the time. James P must have had quite an impression on Robert Edwards. Best regards, Deb Howell
