When the reaper mows the faded flowers,
And they are gathered one by one,
We should not deplore nor wish them back,
For we know that their work was done.

Abigail Adaline Beard, oldest child of Nathan and Caroline Martin Beard, was born in Guilford county North Carolina, August 11, 1831, and was wedded to Obed M. Dixon in the year 1850. Three children were born to this union, Lucy Ann, who died in infancy, W. M. and W. H. familiarly known as Mack and Willie. For a few years peace and happiness reigned supreme in their rose-covered cottage nestling among the broad oaks and stately cedars near her girlhood home. But this chain of happiness was doomed to be severed by the thunders of civil war. Her husband being a Union man, sadly left his family and sought refuge among stranger friends of the North. Soon as the dove of peace could fly over the blood-stained land he hastened to his loved ones, who welcomed him with smiles and tears of joy. In a brief time he disposed of his farm and with his family returned to Henry county, Indiana, and in the spring of 1866 they purchased a small farm near where the industrious little town of Kennard now is, and in a few years by honest labor and strict economy they could view broad acres all their own. Just as their son, Willie, was growing into your manhood he was called by death to the other shore, leaving a wound in the hearts of his parents that the hand of time could never heal. In a few years after the departure of his loved son, Henry Roberson, a nephew of Mrs. Dixon, left the only parents and home that he ever knew, and in June, 1911, he found a grave near Hayward, Cal. In the fall of 1892[sic] somewhere the clouds were rifted and Obed M. dropped the burdens of life and crossed to the great beyond, leaving his faithful wife, Adaline, and son, Mack, to occupy alone their lonely home. At the dawning of the morning on December 1, 1911, at the age of 80 years, 3 month and 20 days, Mother Dixon calmly viewed her home and took her flight. From a child deep in her heart she had love and sympathy for all dumb animals, and those in her care were never for a moment forgotten nor neglected. She made no profession but was an ardent loved of nature and all its beauties. She leaves to mourn her demise her son, Mack, a sister, Mrs. H. F. Sullivan, nephews, nieces and numerous relatives and friends, who revere her honest,, industrious, truthful and virtuous life.
Farewell, faithful, patient, indulgent mother,
Farewell, kind aunt and friend ever true
Good-bye suffering sister, long you have been wanting
This sweet rest that has come unto you.
