When the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was first administered in the old Church at Mendham, Abigail was a communicant (prob. 1745). When the Sacrament was administered in the 2nd Church which was built on the same ground as the first, Abigail was also a Communicant. In the book "Through the Years in Mendham", by Catherine Emmons, the first building was on the site of the present church which was built in 1745 under the leadership of Ebenezer Byram. The book also goes on to state "during the winter of 1778-1780 when general George Washington and his troops were encamped in and around Morristown, the church was stripped of the pews and was used as a hospital to care for the sick of the Continental Army." "Directly in the back of the church are the unmarked graves of 27 of these Rev. War soldiers. IN 1816, the old church was torn down and a new one was then erected. In Feb. 1859, this building burned to the ground. In 1860, the present building was erected and remains much the same today."
