About Abigail Stevens-Morrill

From a book entitled Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, Volume 3: Otho Stevens, Jr., the fifth son of Otho and Abigail Kent Stevens, was born in 1726 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and was taken in his childhood by his parents to Hampstead, New Hampshire, where he grew up. He enlisted in 1759 for the French Indian War, in Captain Jacob Bayley's company of Colonel Zaccheus Lovewell's regiment, which marched under command of Lieutenant Colonel Goffe for the reduction of Fort Niagra. They went by way of Dunstable, Worester, Springfield and Albany. While at Oswego, Captain Bayley made this entry in his journal: "Friday, Septembe 21, 1759, about to o'clock in the afternoon, died Otho Stevens, of a long and tedious illness, of 22 days, much lamented by his rlations and friends, he being a loving brother and a faithful friend." He was married at Hampstead in 1752 to Abigail Emerson, who was born March 20, 1737, daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Watts Emerson of Hampstead. She married (second) December 28, 173, to Deacon David Morrill, of Canterbury, whither she moved with the surviving children of her first marriage. Decon Morrill died June 10, 1799, and his widow survived him thirty-four years, passing away June 30, 1833. Her children by Otho Stevens were: Abiah, Jacob (who died young), Simeon and Jesse. By Deacon Morrill, she was the mother of Rueben, Hannah, David, Betsey, Sarah, Abigail and Ruth.

From a book entitled History of the Town of Canterbury, New Hampshire.....On December 28, 1763, Abigail Emerson Stevens, widow of Otho Stevens and daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Watts Emerson of Hampstead, New Hampshire, married Deacon David Morrill. He was born January 24, 1734, and died June 10, 1799. She was born March 20, 1737, and died January 30, 1833.

David purchased lot 193, first division of 100 acre lots in 1768, and in 1770, home lot 136, east of his father's house. Here he evidently settled. This lot was later divided, Abigail, his daughter, who married Leavitt Clough, residing on the west end, using the hold house; Sally, who married Asa Foster, had the larger east section and built a new house against the old one. The dividing line of the two farms passed between these two houses. Both houses were burned in 1895. Only the baron on the west section remains. Children of Abigail and David who were born in Canterbury were:

1.) Reuben, born October 28, 1764

2.) Hannah, born October 21, 1766, married Rev. Josia Carpenter of Chichester

3.) David, born December 5, 1768

4.) Betsey, born May 30, 1770, died 1848, married William, son of Rev. Abiel Foster

5.) Sarah, born May 17, 1772, died March 28, 1868, married November 10, 1974, Col. Asa Foster, son of Deacon Asa Foster.

6.) Ruth, born December 25, 1776, married Isaac Chickering

7.) Abigail, born February 8, 1779, died May 10, 1853, married October 30, 1800, Levitt, son of Leavitt Clough
