Alexander Webb

Given name has also been erroneously reported to be John Alexander.

Since Alexander Webb and his wife Margaret (Arden) Webb were related to William Shakespeare, their lives have been researched by a multitude of Shakespeare experts. Contrary to many of the modern online family genealogies, Alexander Webb (the putative father) was not a knight, was never called "Sir" and was not even a "gentleman." Both his will and other records related to his life show that he was a humble "husbandman."[7] More critically, the evidence is fairly clear that he did not have a son named Alexander. Alexander (the putative father) left a 1573 will, which included bequests to his six children: Robert, Edward, Anne, Elizabeth, Mary and Sara.[8] The failure of the will to mention a son named Alexander is strong evidence that he did not have one.

Parentage

Alexander's parentage is uncertain. A few older unsourced printed family genealogies[2][3] and many modern online Webb family genealogy pages[4][5][6][7] claim that Alexander and his sister Agnes were the children of a Sir Henry Webb and a Grace Arden. However, no reliable evidence has been found for that parentage or even for the existence of a Sir Henry Webb or a Grace Arden who could possibly be Alexander and Agnes's parents. There are, moveover, many reasons to doubt that parentage, including (1) the fact that, as discussed in the profile for Sir Alexander Webb II, other aspects of those genealogies have been found to be entirely without factual basis, (2) the fact that no reputable Shakespeare scholar who has researched Shakespeare's relatives (including Stopes,[8] Eccles,[9] and Pogue[10]) has identified the parentage of Alexander and his sister Agnes, (3) the fact that the putative father, Sir Henry Webb, is alleged to have been the gentleman usher of Queen Katherine Parr, but, as discussed in his profile, the real Henry Webbe who was the gentleman usher of Queen Katherine Parr was not a Sir, did not marry a woman named Grace Arden, and did not have a son named Alexander, and (4) it is highly unlikely that Alexander, who was a mere husbandman, would have been the son of knight (a "Sir").

Marriage

Alexander married Margaret Arden, sister of Wiliam Shakespeare's mother, Mary Arden.[14][15] Based on the fact that the grant in July 17, 1550 by Robert Arden to his daughters of remainder interests (after his and his wife's deaths) in his Snitterfield estates included a grant (in Latin) to "Margarete Webb, nunc uxoris Alexandri Webbe de Berely,"[16][17] Alexander and Margaret appear to have been married sometime before July 17, 1550. Since Margaret's family was from Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire and her family appears to have been more prominent than his, they were probably in or near Aston Cantlow.

Children

Alexander and his wife Margaret had the following children:

  1. Robert Webb, b. probably sometime in 1548-1554 in Bearley,[18] m. September 1, 1581 Mary Perkes, bur. May 29, 1597. (See discussion and sources in Robert's profile.)
  2. Anne, b. probably sometime in 1555-6[19] in Bearley,[18] living in April 1573[20]
  3. Elizabeth, b. probably about 1557-8[19] in Bearley,[18] living in April 1573[20]
  4. Mary, b. probably about 1559-60[19] in Bearley,[18] living in April 1573[20]
  5. Edward, bpt. July 30, 1562 in Snitterfield,[21][22] living in April 1573[20]
  6. Saray/Sarah, bpt. April 23, 1565 in Snitterfield,[23][24] living in April 1573[20]

The above-listed children are established by their being named in Alexander's will and, in the case of Edward and Saray/Sarah, by their baptismal records. No reliable evidence has been found that establishes that Alexander and Margaret had any other children, and the fact that Alexander named the 6 listed above in his will makes it almost certain that they did not have any other children who were living at the time Alexander made his will in June 1573. As discussed in his profile, Sir Alexander Webb II, who is often shown in Webb family trees as a son of this profile's Alexander Webb and his wife Margaret (Arden) Webb and as the father of many early Webb immigrants to America, is a complete fabrication.
