About Alfred Ferrell

Alfred Ferrell

Alfred Ferrell was the son of John and Elizabeth Ferrell of Hawkins County, Tennessee.

Alfred married Tamsey Lawson on January 09, 1849 in Hawkins County, TN by Jo. R Armstrong at the home of Tamsey's father, Martin Lawson.

Alfred was a veteran of the Mexican–American War. He served in Capt. Powell Company, "E" 5th Tennessee Volunteers. Alfred joined the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in Co "L" 8 Regt Tennessee Cav. Volunteers. He was captured and died in a Confederate prison camp in Richmond, Virginia.

It is the understanding of the family that the bodies of soldiers who died at Belle Isle Prison Camp were transferred to Richmond National Cemetery. There is no marker to our knowledge for Alfred.

Alfred was the father of Lucinda Ferrell (Manis), Minerva Ferrell (Stapleton), Mary Ferrell, Ellen Ferrell (Mabe), Martin Ferrell, Cornelia Ferrell (Harris), and George Washington Ferrell.

That she is the widow of Alfred Ferrell, who under the name of Alfred Ferrell, enlisted, and was honorably discharged as a member of Capt. Powell Company, "E" 5th Tennessee Volunteers in the "Mexican War".
That she was Marred under the name of Tamsey Lawson to said Alfred Ferrell on "Thursday after old Christmas", in January 1847 or 1848, by Jo. R. Armstrong, a Justice of the Peace, at the house of Claimants Father in aforesaid county, there being no legal barriers to such marriage, that neither her nor her husband had been previously married; that she has to the present date remained his widow; that she cannot make positive proof of the death of her said husband, Alfred Ferrell, but she declared that he enlisted in the Union army during the late Rebellion, and was captured by the enemy before being mustered into service, and was taken off as a prisoner, and has never yet returned, and she has been informed, and verily believes that her said husband died

In the matter of Claim No. 652 under act of Jan 29th 1887, Tamsey, widow of Alfred Ferrell, Co. E 5th Tenn Vols, Mexican.
On this 18th day of July A.D. 1887; personally before me a justice of the peace in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, John Lawson aged 49, a resident of Lee Valley in the County of Hawkins and state of Tennessee whose Post Office is Lee Valley Tennessee is well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows:
I recalle(?) at of being present and saw Alfred Ferrell and Tamsey Lawson, who is the claimant in this case, married. They was married very shortly after Alfred Ferrell got home from the Mexican War, but I forget the date. Jo. R. Armstrong a Justice of the Peace married them at the house of Martin Lawson in Poor Valley, Hawkins County, Tenn.
I can also state by information that said Alfred Ferrell volunteered in the Federal Army in the late war, was taken prisoner by the Confederated, and died in a rebel prison, I live near claimant and know that her late husband the said Ferrell has never returned since the war. And that the whole community considers as I do that he died as above stated. The Claimant has never remarried, she is very poor and dependant on her own labor for a support, and has no property of any kind of value, and I should say she is about 60 or 65 years old by my guess, and is lately getting very weakly and broken in health. I am about a third cousin to claimant.
I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in its prosecution.

In the matter of Claim No. 652, Tamsey Ferrell, widow of Alfred Ferrell, Co. E. 5th Tenn Vols, Mexican War. On this 28th day of May A.D. 1887 personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid county duly authorized to administer oaths, Minerva Stapleton, aged 52 years, a resident of Lee Valley in the county of Hawkins and State of Tennessee whose Post Office address is Lee Valley, Tennessee,
well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows:
I was a witness present at the marriage of Alfred Ferrell and Tamsey, the claimant in this case, they were married at the house of claimants father, Martin Lawson, in Hawkins Co. Tenn, by Jo. R. Armstrong Esq. who was then a Justice of the Peace, the marriage took place shortly after said soldier returned from the Mexican War, but I do not recollect the date.
Said Soldier and the claimant continued to live in the marriage relation until during the late war, he, the said Alfred Ferrell enlisted in the union army and was taken prisoner by the confederate soldiers before being mustered, and was taken away and has never returned; I have heard from reliable sources that he died in prison, and have heard nothing farther from him. Claimant still remains a widow having never remarried, she lives in a small rented cabin about a half mile from my home; she has no property and depends entirely on her own labor for her subsistence and support, said claimant has a pension claim filed as widow, for loss of husband during the late war, but her said claim has disallowed by reason of her husband having been captured by the enemy after he enlisted , but before being mustered into the service. Claimant has been compelled to labor ever since the late war to support herself and several children legitimate heirs of her husband.
I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in its prosecution.
