About Pvt. Alfred Emanuel Smith, Sr.
We know from the service record of Private Alfred Smith, age 22, that he volunteered on April 20, 1861 in New York City. He was assigned to Company F. The 11th New York State Infantry, the Fire Zouaves, was an 1100+ man strong regiment comprised of New York City Volunteer firemen. Alfred was a member of the East River Hose Company, Liberty 10, headquartered on Dover Street. As I had mentioned before, his mother Magdalena (Madeline) Kolbe Smith had remarried after the 1859 death of her husband, Emanuel Smith. She married Francis Lewis sometime after the 1860 Federal census. Perhaps her married status gave Alfred the ability to leave his mother in New York while he went on, what he thought would be, a 90 day sojourn to the South.
