About Alice M. Uhling (born Gentry)

Alice M. Uhling, 77, of Cottonwood, went to be with Ray and Jim, husband and son, in heaven, Monday, Dec. 27, 2004. Alice died at Life Care Center of Lewiston of natural causes.

Alice was born April 12, 1927, at Keuterville to Rufus and Margaret Gentry. She was the youngest of 12 children, with eight brothers and three sisters. She grew up in the Keuterville area and attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. She and her brothers and sisters rode to school on horseback. Her childhood years were spent helping with chores around the family ranch.

On June 5, 1945, Alice married Raymond F. Uhling of Cottonwood. Together they raised five children. Alice and Ray worked together farming and ranching. Alice always had a large garden and always canned many jars of produce for her family. She was an amazing cook and had the ability to create something out of nothing. Alice cooked for many weddings and receptions in the community.

Alice worked at the Broaster Cafe for Liz Brady for several years. Alice was a member of the Cottonwood Church Guild. While farming and raising children, Alice worked at several other jobs. She painted houses with Bill Jacks. She was a bartender, cook, carpenter, cattle rancher and horsewoman. Alice loved the outdoors and dreamed of being a veterinarian. She just had a sense of knowing what was wrong with animals. Alice was a Star Route mail carrier, contracted through the U.S. Postal Service, for 26 years.

Alice had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger. Alice loved to dance with her best partner of 42 years until Ray's death in November 1987. Family and friends will fondly remember her for her extraordinary quick wit and sense of humor. That wit and humor stayed with her even during extreme health conditions. She was extremely strong-willed, yet had a tender heart. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alice is survived by four daughters, Judy and Bill Deal of Huntsville, Ala., June and Dwayne Ellis of Eagle, Idaho, Janice and Gerald Latimer of Cottonwood and Kathy Uhling of Meridian, Idaho. Grandchildren are Mike Deal of Dallas; Lori Deal of Atlanta; Shayne and Alayna Ellis of Eagle; Ashley Ellis of Eagle; Brian and Angie Latimer, Todd and Donna Latimer, and Chad Latimer of Cottonwood. Great-grandchildren are Aubrey Deal, Jacob Ellis, Tyler and Brandon Latimer, Kirsten and Trista Latimer and Sierra Latimer. Two brothers, Jiggs Gentry of Wenatchee, Wash., and Joe Gentry of Coeur d'Alene, also survive her, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband Ray; her only beloved son, Jim; twin daughters; six brothers; and three sisters preceded Alice in death.

Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church at Cottonwood, with burial at the Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery.
