Their wedding ceremony was performed by Andrew's brother, John W. Gish. Andrew married Lavina Annabell Daniels, and his sister Mary Ann married Samuel Daniels, Lavina's brother.

LaSueur County is located in the valley of the Minnesota River about 60 miles south of St. Paul The county was formed in 1853 and contains 472.48 sq/ mi. This area was once called the "Big Woods". There was a timber tract 100 miles long by 40-50 miles east and west. There were 35 varieties of trees and many beautiful lakes and streams. Most of the land was well-suited to agriculture and was primarily settled by Germans, Irish, and Bohemians.

Andrew enlisted in the Union Army on Dec 28, 1861 at age 25. He served his enlistment, returned home for a few months and then agreed to go back in the place of someone who was willing to pay. They were so poor that he went for $350. He was probably in Company J, 4th Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers. His best friend Commodore Chauncy McIntire, known as C.C. was in that Company. He was wounded (gutshot) July 5, 1864 at Altoona, Georgia, dying as a result. Elice told her granddaughter that she woke up one night to see 2 soldiers carrying her father in a cot in the moonlight. He turned his head, smiled at her, and then disappeared. She went to tell her mother that she had seen him and was told that she had been dreaming. When they got word of his death, the "dream" had happened at approximately the same time. Elice was just four years old at the time, and Andrew was born 3 months later. Family tradition says that Andrew's friend promised to go back and take care of Andrew's wife, Lavinia. He did; he married her!

The following is a letter that Rob Gish obtained:

Head Quarters 4th Minn Vol Infantry

Allatoona Station, GA Oct 9th 1864

Mrs. Lavina A. Gish

Madame

It is with feeling of great reluctance and pain that I undertake the task of writing you concerning the death of your husband. Who was shot through the thigh and left groin in a very severe battle that was fought at this place on the 5th of Oct. 1864 and from the effects of which he died on the 7th. He was as well cared for and as decently buried as could be under the circumstances. His Father-in-law, Mr. Daniels took care of him. While I and his companions in arms feel the lost of a good companion and soldier. You must mourn the lost of a kind and affectionate husband. He had endeared himself to me and all who knew him by his promptness and earnestness in doing a soldier's duty. Always ready for work no matter the consequences and was shot while in the act of bringing up a box of cartridges for his company. Enclosed I send you receipts to sign which you will please do and return to me by mail as it is necessary for me to have them to send to Washington so they can make a final settlement. You can have things sent to you by express if you will so order me. But as you will see that they would be of no use and not pay the express. Mr. Daniels and I think that you had better have them sold here and I will send you the moneys for them by mail, You will sign the receipts in either case or else the things are disposed of by counsel of administrative and the proceeds are turned over to a paymaster and you will get it in a final settlement.

I am Madame

Your obt sev (obedient servant)

D. L. Wellman Capt.

4th Min. Vol Inft

Company I

adress

Co. I 4th Minnesota Inft

3rd Division 15th Army Corp

Wellman refers to Hiram Daniels Lavina's father. CC McIntire isn't listed but he was there. Someone, I don't remember who, said Andy died in his arms asking him to look out for Lavina and kids. Both Henry and Jacob (brother and father) were out of the war by this time. CC was mustered out on April 20, 1865 so Hiram was the only one who marched in the grand parade through Washington. He was discharged with the regiment on July 19th, 1865.

Andrew Sr. enlisted in the union Army on December 28, 1861 at age 25. He was wounded July 5, 1864 at Aitoona, Georgia. He died of gangrene as a result of those wounds on October 7,1864 Or Enlisted in the Civil War 1860-1864
