Jacob Wagner Gish

Jacob and Mariah married in Boutetourt Co, VA in 1827. They apparently moved from there to Miami Co, Ohio, after 1828. Their move to Clark Co, OH, took place by the 1830 census and Lewis was born there in Jan 1834. In 1830, the Clark County, Ohio, Pike TWSP census shows the family with 1 male between 20-30 and one female between 20-30, and 1 male under 5. That is probably John born in 1828. There are two Daniel families listed nearby. Perhaps they were related to Lavinia and Samuel who married into this Gish family. In the 1840 Census they are shown in Clark County, Pike TWP. There is a record showing for them in Homes, Clark County on January 23, 1841. By 1843, they were in Ripley, Delaware County, IND, and in Sullivan, Cass County, IND, in 1848. The 1850 Census lists them in Tipton, Cass County.

On November 8, 1858, Jacob W Gish purchased 40 acres in LeSueur County, MN, from John S and Martha Brown. The property was the West 1/2 of the north 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 15, Township 109, North of Range 23 West. This was very near property purchased by Hiram Daniels, father of Lavinia Daniels who married Jacob's son, Andrew. A visit to that area in 2010 by Karen Plummer led to the conclusion that the Gish property was located at the intersection of what is now HWYs 13 and 166 (480th St.) north of Waterville.

The 1860 Federal Census lists J.W. (53) and Maria (51) Gish in Waterville, Minnesota. They and their oldest son, John, are said to have been born in Virginia. The next 5 children were born in Ohio, and the last 4 in Indiana. They are listed as farmers with a real estate value of $200. and personal estate worth $175.

During the Civil War Jacob was in the 4th Regiment, Company H. He was mustered in 27 Dec, 1861. He was discharged for disability on 18 Jul 1862.

They belonged to the Dunkard Church.
