He died there on 13 September 1824 and is buried in St George's Church cemetery, Hempstead, where his grave and tombstone still are viewable. Stephen married four times and had children by each: 1) Sarah Pettit, born 1755, daughter of Joseph and Ann (Germain) Pettit, on 25 December 1769 at St George's Church. 2) Sarah Raynor (1750-1785) daughter of James Raynor, on 28 April 1777 at St George's Church. 3) Ann 'Rock' Smith, born 21 November 1760 at Merrick, Queens, New York, died 21 June 1791 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, daughter of John "Rock" and Rachel (Valentine) Smith, married on 30 October 1785 at St George's Church. 4) Elizabeth Smith, born 1758 and died 20 June 1834 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, widow of Joseph Dorlan and daughter of Joseph "Rock" and Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Smith, married on 28 July 1796 at, yes once again, St George's Church. Elizabeth is buried in the St George's Church cemetery.
