About Ann Lewis

Ann was born between 1661/ 1665 possibly in Westerly Rhode Island and died before 29 February 1747/48 (1) in Westerly Rhode Island. Will dated 25 Jul 1739, proved 29 Feb 1747/8 Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. The surname of Ann has never been proven, although information is advanced by some that she was the daughter of John and Ruth Lanphere.

Married: Abt. 1682 to John Lewis (1660-1735) son of John Lewis (1624-1690) and an unknown woman.

8 children include:

  2. Sarah Lewis 1687 -
  3. Mary Lewis 1689 - Bef 1739
  4. Anna Lewis 1690/1 - 1748
  5. Abigail Lewis 1693 - Aft 1733
  6. John Lewis 1698 - Bef 1741
  7. William Lewis 1701/2 -
  8. Jerusha Lewis

Notes

John Lanphear was born, probably at Westerly, say 1681. He executed a deed on 21
Nov 1740, so he died between this date and 30 May 1757 when his will was proved. His daughter, Anna's birth was estimated at say 1707. So it does not look like she could be the mother of the children of John^2 Lewis. These children were born between 1683 and 1707. The Westerly records (Arnold) list John only as the parent of the first 8 children, but the youngest, Jerusha, born in 1707 is named as the daughter of John and Ann.

  1. Ann's Will probated February 29, 1748, written July 25, 1748, named daughter Jerusha as executrix and gave to each child 5 shillings, to grandson William Slack, 10 pounds, and to the Church of the seventh Day Baptists, in Westerly, 7 pounds. To granddaughter Anna Slack, 5 pounds. To grandsons Christopher and Joshua Lewis, sons of Jerusha, a pair of steers equally. To daughter Jerusha, the rest of estate. Inventory, 47 pounds, 14 shillings.[Riddell 1.FTW]

It has been pointed out, however, that there would seem to be too great a difference in age possibility here, but nothing has been found otherwise to identify the Lewis who married Anna (Lanphere) Lewis. My searches have frequently turned up references that the American Lampheres/Lamphears are entitled to a British coat of arms awarded in 1822 to a Lt Col Thomas Lanphier of Tipperary Ireland.

Since that coat of arms was awarded in 1822 to Thomas and his grandfather John, and The American branch of this originally French family (emigrated to England in 1500s) began with George in in the 1660s, I'm thinking we are NOT entitled to that crest http://www.heraldry.ws/gif/lanphier-tipp.gif

Instead, it would seem more likely that the original French crest applies to our side http://www.thetreemaker.com/coats/Lanphier-France.jpg

Would appreciate comments on this matter.
