Anne (Lloyd) Eaton migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Biography

Puritan Great Migration Anne (Lloyd) Eaton immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for England Ann Lloyd was born about 1595 in Norwich, England; the daughter of George Lloyd, the bishop of Chester in England[1] and his wife Anne (Wilkenson) Lloyd.[2]

Ann married Thomas Yale of Plas Grono, Wales,[3] the son of Rev. David Yale and his wife Frances Lloyd[4] and had two children:[1]

Ann (Hopkins) David Thomas Yale. Thomas Yale died in 1619.[3]

She married (2nd) to Theophilus Eaton, brother of Nathaniel and Samuel Eaton and son of Rev. Richard Eaton of Whettley, Chestershire, England.[5] Theophilus had married (1st) to Grace Hillier. In Ann's marriage to Theophilus the couple had two children:[1]

Hannah Eaton Theophilus Eaton, Jr. She lived with her husband in the parish of St. Stephen's, Coleman Street London until in 1637 they migrated to New England in the company of John Davenport.[1]The family migrated on the ship Hector out of London and landed in Boston.[6]

Along with Davenport, they all left Boston in 1638 with the men founding New Haven in that year. Eaton was the first governor of New Haven Colony in 1643 and continued serving until he died in 1658.[1]The will of Governor Theophilus Eaton can be found at New England Historic Genealogical Register here: [7]

In 1645 the church at New Haven excommunicated Ann Easton for her belief in adult baptism.[1][8]

A few years following her husband's death, Ann Eaton went to England with her children Hannah and Theophilus.[1]

Ann Eaton died by August 1659, at Seven Oakes in Chester,[4] a short while after returning to England.[1]

Research Notes

"A descendant of King John and Llywelyn Fawr ap Iorwerth and his son David, princes of North Wales, and a daughter of George Lloyd, Bishop of Chester, and Anne Wilkinson, Anne Lloyd was first married to Thomas Yale, a distant cousin also descended from King John and Llywelyn and David of North Wales. Yale died about 1619 and before 1628 Anne married Theophilus Eaton (ca. 1590-1657/8), a London merchant who brought Anne, her Yale children, and other family members to Boston in 1637 and soon thereafter to New Haven. Theophilus was the first governor of the New Haven Colony, 1643-58, and a virtual partner with Rev. John Davenport – also of royal descent, but with a much smaller notable progeny (at least as yet traced) – in the Colony’s founding and theocratic governance. After Eaton’s death Anne returned to England and died a year or two later at Seven Oaks, Cheshire."[4]
