Disputed Parents
A previous profile merged into this one incorrectly identified the Anna Ewer who married Daniel Wing in June 1666 as the daughter of Thomas Ewer and Sarah Learned. The only known basis for this claim is a footnote in Spooner, who cites no source.[1] The known children of Thomas and Sarah are listed in the Strood parish baptismal records, and do not include any Anna or Hannah.[2] As set forth below, the consensus among more recent scholarly research is that she was their daughter-in-law, widow of their son Thomas, and that her maiden name and origin are unknown.
Biography
Hannah (or Anna), whose maiden name and parents are unknown,[3] married first Thomas Ewer, perhaps about 1662. Thomas died at sea before 31 May 1667, when "Hannah" is identified as "the Relect of the aforsaid Thomas Ewer" in an inventory during the probate of his estate.[4] Thomas left his widow Hannah, and children.[5]
As "Anna" Ewer, she married second, at Sandwich, Daniel Wing "in the fourth moneth of ye yeare" (June) 1666. [6] Daniel Wing took over the administration of the estate of Thomas Ewer after their marriage, and was subject to the complaint of Thomas Clarke in October 1667: “Daniell Winge, administrator to the estate of Thomas Ewer…to the damage of thirty pounds, for non payment of a debt of twenty three pounds and all money due him from Ewer.”[7]
Anna and Daniel Wing had three children together in Sandwich between 1668-74.[8]
She died about 1720.[9]
