Arvilla was the daughter of Levi Smith and Lovisa Atwater of Connecticut. She and Nathan Cook Meeker were married 8 April 1844 in Geauga Co OH. They were the parents of Ralph Lovejoy,George, Rozene, Mary Ann, Josephine.

In 1878, her husband, Nathan Cook Meeker, was appointed US Agent at the White River Indian Agency in western Colorado, and was killed by Utes the next year in what became known as the Meeker Massacre, part of the Ute War. Arvilla and an adult daughter, Josephine, were taken captive for about three weeks.
