Asher Waterman was the son of Dr. Luther and Phebe Barker Waterman. He was born in New York but migrated west with his mother and others of the Waterman family after his father died.

He served in the Ohio 2nd Regiment during the War of 1812 in Capt. Nehemiah Gregory's Company.

He married Bathsheba Paulk 22 Dec 1816. Bathsheba was born in 1791 in Massachusetts.

The 1850 U.S. Census for Troy Twp., Athens County, Ohio, has these persons listed in Asher's household: Asher age 58 Basheba age 55 Charles W. age 29 b.1821 Mary Ann (wife of Charles W.) age 20 Jason age 21 b.1829 Nancy age 18 b.1832 Cyntha age 16 b.1836 Lucy age 12 b.1838 Louis age 12 b.1838

  • William B. b.1819
  • Eunice b. 1823
  • Homer b. 1825
  • Jerusha b. 1827
  • Sarah Amanda b. 1835

Anecdotal information within the family says that Asher donated the land on which the North Bethel United Methodist Church stands on Rt. 7, about 1 mile south of Coolville, Ohio. The church began as a log cabin and was later replaced by a modern building. It still stands to this day (21 June 2014).

Some of the information here is from headstone transcriptions of Bethel Cemetery originally compiled in 1989 in: "Cemetery Records, Book No. 4" Compiled by Grace Jeffers Greiner and Robert & Shirley Harper. Reprinted in 1996 by Athens County Historical Society & Musuem. And from research conducted by Frances Gillilan. Her husband, Carl Gillilan, was descended from the Smiths & Watermans through his grandmother Nora Smith Gillilan Wise.
