Audrey was born about 1627 in England and died after 1683 at Lancaster County, Virginia.

Audrey Merryman, widow of John Merryman, Sr., married Captain Edward Carter of Lancaster County in 1680. She deeded 50 acres of John Merryman's land to Lt Colonel John Carter, on November 10, 1680 to establish a town in Lancaster County.

John Merryman was born before 1628 in England. He died before 21 Nov 1674 in Lancaster County, Virginia. He is seen as the son of Thomas Merryman and Alice Russell. He was not the John Merryman, attorney, who married Bridget Price. This John Merryman was married to Audrie in England about 1648.

John MERRYMAN and Audrie had the following children:

  • i. William MERRYMAN. (b. abt-1650), married Mary.
  • ii. Elizabeth MERRYMAN was born before 1652 in Lancaster County, Virginia. Married William Reynolds.
  • iii. Charles MERRYMAN. (b. abt-1657) who moved to Baltimore County. Maryland as an adult. Married Mary Haile.

1653 - John and Audrey Merryman patented 100 acres February 26. 1653. All this land adjoined that of John Paine. and is the land, referred to in court records of 1657 stating that John Merryman owned land near the mouth of the Corotoman River. and of 1665 stating that his land was very near the first Lancaster County Court House on White House Creek

1670 - 1670-1674 Lancaster County Order Book; Antient Press: pg 153 Lancaster County Court 13th of July 1670 - For the affront offered by the Wife of JOHN MERRYMAN in the face of this Cort: to Mr. THOMAS MARSHALL, hee is fined 500 lb. of tob: to bee disposed off by the further order of this Cort , or his Wife to suffer corporall punishmt.

He died intestate. Court of 21 Nov 1674 commissioned administration of the estate of John Merriman, dec'd to Audrey Merriman, relict of the said John Merriman. On 13 Jan 1675, William Merriman, heir of John Merriman, dec'd in administration with his mother, Audrey Merriman, petitions for his estate. The inventory was made in Nov 1674 by Thomas Chowning, George Bussey, William Sonnett, D. Parish and Dominie Therryot. Listed were a Bible annd other books, four horses, twelve cows, tables, chairs, beds, dram cups, looking glasses, kitchenware, tools, saddles and other items, total value of 20,640#, tabacco and the original grant of 500 acres.

By Nov 1680, his widow had married Edward Carter. A deed of Nov 1680 reads: "Indenture between William, the eldest son of John Merriman, late of said county, Charles Merriman, Lancaster wheelwright, youngest son of said John Merriman, and Edward Carter of the same county and Audrey his wife, the late widow and relict of the said John Merriman, dec'd... to Col. John Carter and Capt. David Fox, gentlemen for 1000# tabacco... being part of 500 acres granted to John Merriman 14 Nov 1649... 50 acres standing on the point at the mouth of small creek...".
