Barbara (Hirschman) Burnham, 83, of Kingsley, Iowa, died Friday, August 13, 2004 at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in Kingsley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 16, 2004 at the Kingsley United Methodist Church, with Reverend Paul Evans officiating. Musical selections were congregational hymns, "Hymn of Promise" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Elaine Bohle was organist. Burial was at the Kingsley Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa. Pallbearers were Byron Hirschman, Daniel Hirschman, Scott Hirschman, John Hirschman, Joel Hirschman, Don Hirschman, and Carl Hirschman. Honorary pallbearers were Nancy Rohr, Sara Puttmann, Barbara Hirschman, Becky Johnson, and Kathie Perkins. Arrangements were by Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home of Kingsley, Iowa.

Barbara was born August 9, 1921 to G. W. and Frances (Foster) Bainbridge. She spent a few childhood years in Minnesota before returning to the farm east of Kingsley, Iowa. She married Don Hirschman in Plymouth County in 1943 Don was in the Army, stationed in Texas when their first son was born. Barb spent her days as a driver for the base officers. After WWII ended, they returned to the Kingsley area and raised their four sons on a farm northeast of Kingsley. Don died in 1965.

Barbara taught at country schools northeast of Kingsley, and at Grand Meadow and Marcus schools for 30 years. She received her BA in Education from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. She was a great teacher and well liked by her students. She retired from teaching in 1985. In 1968, Barbara married Lowell Burnham. Barbara and Lowell loved traveling and took several tours to Canada, Europe, and New England. In 1979, she built a new home, designed by her son, in rural Correctionville, Iowa, where her husband, Lowell, grew up. Lowell died in 1983.

She was a 50 year member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for years, and was a member of P.E.O., where she had served as past president.

Barbara is survived by four sons, Don Hirschman and his wife, Pamela, of Le Mars, Iowa, David Hirschman and his wife, Morrison, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Frank Hirschman and his wife, Jenny, of Kingsley, Iowa, and Myron Hirschman and his wife, Kristie, of Winterset, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, and twelve "great" great-grandchildren. Also, one sister, Peg Kraft Knudson of Kingsley, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed towards a scholarship fund established in Barbara's name. Inscription: LOVING WIFE, MOTHER, & TEACHER
