About Benjamin Handley
Attorney of Sleaford, conveyancer and land matters specialist; In 1792 he became a banker. With local men, he founded the Bank of Peacock, Handley and Kirton, with premises in Market Place, and from 1803 in Northgate. The bank merged with Lloyd's in 1912. The bank also had a branch in Newark, which again merged with Lloyd's. From 1817-1820 he was Deputy Recorder of Boston, and received the Freedom of Boston in the latter year. By 1826 he was a Magistrate and JP for the County, but retired shortly thereafter because of failing health.
