About Benjamin V McCarthy I

BVM I was a contractor/stabler. He had an early demise when a sewer pipe laying on Laurens Street, West Germantown, which he was supervising, went awry and the embankment collapsed, killing BVM I. Joe McCarthy, the eventual baseball manager, and his only offspring from Susan Marley Cassidy McCarthy, was four months old at the time.

According to the news report he was then living at 218 E. Haines Street. That house is now ( June,2008) abandoned, boarded up and for sale.

He is buried at New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler Sts, Phila, in a plot bought by Benjamin McCarthy (II? perhaps) with Johanna, his first wife, and several McCarthys of whom I'm not aware, in terms af where they fit into the family tree. There are two Johns, one buried on 9/11/1893 at age 2 years, the other buried 11/03/1896, at 1 year old, and a Josephine buried 9/16/1893 at age 4 years.
