Bernhard Fürth co-founded a prosperous matches factory and company in Schüttenhofen/Sušice in 1844, the first one in Europe, later well-known under the brand name of SOLO.

When Sušice is mentioned, nearly everybody thinks of matches! However, hardly anybody knows that the history of the production of the lowly match includes a romantic element. The pharmacist Štěpán Römer produced phosphor matches in Vienna in 1830s. Miss Marie Urbancová helped him with his work. The carpenter journeyman Vojtěch Scheinost fell in love with her and some time later they left for Sušice. Thanks to his knowledge, Vojtěch Scheinost established the production of phosphor matches in Sušice in 1839. After two years of working for himself, he formed a partnership with businessman Bernard Fürth, and they built the first match factory in 1844. The production of so called safety matches was established, and exported all over the world. Sušice’s matches have used the “Solo” trade mark since the beginning of 20th century.
