About Bridget Elliot

Generation 9.

Richard Elliott (3), son of Richard Elliott (2) and Godliva Skinner, was born in 1546, in Port Eliot, Devon, England, and died 22 June 1609, Cornwall, England.

He was married to Bridget Carswell, who was born in 1542 in Hatch Beauchamp, Somerset, England, and died in 1617 in Cornwall.

Sir John Eliot (11 April 1592 – 27 November 1632) was an English statesman who was serially imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he eventually died, by King Charles I for advocating the rights and privileges of Parliament.

The son of Richard Eliot (1546 - 22 June 1609) and Bridget Carswell (c. 1542 - March 1617), he was born at Cuddenbeak, a farm on his father's Port Eliot estate at St Germans in Cornwall. He was baptised on 20 April at St Germans Church, immediately next to Port Eliot. The Eliot family were an old Devon family that had settled in Cornwall.

<nowiki>--------------------------------------------</nowiki> The surname ELLIOTT was a baptismal name which was derived from the Old French name ELIAS. The name was brought into England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. The earliest of the name on record was Heliot de Slohebi, 1200 County Lancashire. Elyot ad Capville, was documented in the year 1273 in the County of Cambridge. Adam Elyotson of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Thomas Elyott was the rector of Dicklebugh, County Norfolk in 1393. Thomas Eliot married Margaret Wait, St. Michael, Cornhill, London in 1607. Although occasionally occuring in medieval records in Ireland, for the most part the came went to Ireland at the time of the Plantation of Ulster. It has been associated with County Cavan and Fermanaghm, but in the 19th century it was numerous in County Leitrim also. An interesting member of the family name was Grace Dalrymple Elliott, the courtesan, who was born in Scotland in 1758, the daughter of an Edinburgh advocate. In 1771, she married Sir John Elliott MD, who divorced her in 1774. She was the mistress successively or simultaneously of Lord Valentinia, Lord Cholmondley, The Prince of Wales and many others. She died in 1823 in Sevres, leaving an interesting but untrustworthy 'Journal of My Life during the Revolution'. Walter Elliot (1888-1958) was the Scottish politician, and Conservative MP for Lanark from 1918 until 1923. He was secretary of state for Scotland, and minster of health. He was also a writer and broadcaster. His wife, Baroness Katharine of Harwood, was created Scotland's first life peeress in October 1958. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years. As society became more complex, and such matters as the management of tenure, and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to distinguish a more complex system of nomenclature to differentiate one individual from another. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Registered at the Ulster Office.
