He must have died by 1723 because a deed shows that Elizabeth was married to John Rust at that time - per " The Walls family of Delaware : an account of some descendants of Thomas and William Walls of Sussex County, Delaware.”

Children (3)

  1. John Walls 1712–1738. Married Sarah Bracy.
  2. Thomas Walls 1714-1785. Married Mary Jane Derby or Depree.
  3. William Walls 1715-1774. Married Elizabeth.

Person note

Story from Michael Walls (as told to him by his Grandfather Keifer Willis Walls)

William Walls was ship's Captain and owned his own ship or ships. William was sailed the Chesapeake Bay and up and down the Atlantic coast hauling cargo. His father and mother were from England and his father married out of his class or religion and they fled to the colonies to avoid persecution from both families.

Andrea McCarty found a lot of history on this William Walls, ships Captain. He was the father of John, William and Thomas.

William's father is said to be Samuel Walls and Mary Manlove. Never proved, but fits with story.

Samuel's father is said to be Manfred Walls and there are some records about him in the Puritan Church of England. (If Samuel Walls was a Puritan and Mary Manlove's family being of the Church of England - this would fit.)

Origins

A Samuel Walls sailed from England aboard the sloop "True Friendship" for Antiqua, West Indie s, Oct 7, 1679 according to IGI passenger lists (Doc # 463) Also mentioned by Runk in (Do c # 450. Is this the same person, or another??

Loren Noblitt in "Torchbearers of the faith" claims this Samuel as the ancestor to his Manlove. States he came to America with a group of Cambridge University Puritan students aboard the True Friendship landing in Massachusetts October 17, 1679. After his marriage to Mary Manlove in 1681, the couple renounced their Puritan heritage and settled in Delaware. (Doc # 509 )

"The Walls Family of Delaware" by Lewis Kiehn gives the birthplace of Samuel's children as Maryland or England ? Did he stay in Maryland before going to Delaware? Maybe between 1679 an d 1700.

Above reference also found by Lewis Keihn (Doc # 469 p 6) he uses the date 27 May 1713 (proba bly date will was probated) his source: Delaware Hall of Records, Sussex Co Probate Records , Vol A67, p 188, Will of John Crew.

Friends, John Crew, born 1660 in Accomack Co., VA and died 1713 in Sussex County, DE, was married at least twice; first to an unnamed daughter of John Depree of Sussex Co., and second to Annabelle, the widow of Richard Harvey. Annabelle survived John Crew and married third, Richard Bracy, as his second or third wife.

The only known child of the first marriage is Elizabeth Crew who married a William Walls on the same day as her father, John Crew, married the widow Harvey [Elizabeth Cooper nee Walls nee Crew's deposition in 1759, Deeds "I', folio 345). Elizabeth was born circa 1694.

Children of John Crew by Annabelle were

  1. Ann Crew (married William Stockley);
  2. Honor Crew (married Ralph Tindall), and
  3. Frances Crew (married John Stevens) [Deed Book F, folio 270].

Incannot find much on this William Walls, though a son John Walls was mentioned in John Crew's will. I think that Thomas and William Walls were also his sons. The girls were under age 14 in 1712 when the will was made.

Can anybody help with Stockley, Tindall, and Stevens descendants of John Crew? The William Stockley does not fit into the Stockley families I have seen. Ralph Tindall did not leave a will. And, I think that John Stevens ended up in Worcester Co., MD after 1740 or so. Any help with tracking John Crew's descendants will be greatly appreciated. Brian Walls Columbia, Maryland.

Notes for William Walls:

From Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware, Vol III,published 1899 by J. M. Runk & Co., Chambersburg, PA; from biography of Simon Davidson Walls, grandson of Eli, concluding on p. 1018) [p. 1017]....

The founder of the American branch of the Walls family, [sic] was Samuel Walls, an English immigrant, who settled in Georgetown hundred, Sussex county, Del.

One of his descendants, Samuel Walls,...took up a large tract of wild land in Sussex county, cleared and cultivated it, and at his death left to each of his sons a well-tilled farm.

Samuel Walls had five sons:

  • I.Eli;
  • II. Nehemiah, a soldier in the war of 1812, for some time court crier of Sussex county, died near Georgetown, Del.;
  • III. Samuel, died on his farm near Georgetown;
  • IV. Peter, deceased;
  • V. Thomas, died...of small pox.

~Eli Walls...was a skilful [sic] mechanic whose services as millwright and wheelwright were constantly in demand. He also owned and cultivated a farm
near Georgetown, Del., and for some time was engaged in distilling brandy. Eli
Walls was a soldier in the American army during the war of 1812, and with his
brother, Nehemiah, and his cousin, Eli Walls, who was a drum major, belonged to the Home Guard, stationed at Lewes, Del. Mr. Walls was popular and highly
esteemed in the county, in which he held various minor offices. He was an
efficient officer, but would not appear as a candidate for any important position. He was a diligent student and an excellent penman, noted for the dexterity with which he could perform strange antics with his quill, even to writing with the pen upside down.

Eli Walls was married to Lydia Simpler. Their children are:

  • I. James...;
  • II. Eli;
  • III. Gideon...;
  • IV. Jonathan, (was thrown by a horse, struck his head against a tree, and died from the effects of the blow;)
  • V.Lydia...;
  • VI.Mary...;
  • VII. Nancy...;
  • VIII. Leah...;
  • IX. Sarah...;
  • X. Kate....

Mr.Walls died on the homestead, three miles from Georgetown, Del., in 1842; his widow died a few years after. Both are interred in the family burial ground onthehome farm...
