Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Acworth-322

Elizabeth Horne was born in 1546. As her father Robert Horne was a Lecturer in Hebrew at Cambridge in 1546/47, it seems probable that Elizabeth was born in Cambridge. She was the eldest of 5 sisters of Robert Horne[1] (Bishop of Winchester) and his wife Margery[2]. Elizabeth was baptised[3] at St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey, England on 23 Apr 1633.

Her younger siblings were Ann (born in 1550?), Margery born in Frankfort am Maine, Hesse when her father was in Europe during the reign of Queen Mary, and two other sisters - Mary and Rebecca, both of unknown birth dates.

Elizabeth Horne married[1] George Acworth on 24 December 1564 in the Chapel of Farnam Castle, Surrey. This was one of the Residences of the Bishops of Winchester.

Elizabeth had three children with George Acworth. Richard (born 9 Sep 1565) was the eldest and followed by Francis (born 25 March 1567) and Catherine.

George Acworth died before 1586 in Ireland and Elizabeth married again Anthony Dering of Charing, Kent who had previously been married to Jane (unknown). Their first child, Elizabeth Dering, was born on 27 August 1587. This fact gives a latest date for the death of George as 1586. There was a second child called Anthony Dering.

Elizabeth (Horne) (Acworth) Dering died in 1613.

Research Notes

Daughters of Robert Horne

In his will Robert Horne mentions only 4 daughters, of which Elizabeth is not one. Robert Horne leaves to his nephew Richard Acworth his Latin and Greek texts on the humanities. We know that Richard was the son of Elizabeth Horne and George Acworth. The will seems to suggest then that Elizabeth was the child of a sibling of Robert Horne rather than a daughter. However, no further information has been found and Elizabeth is frequently listed as a daughter[2] rather than a neice. The monograph on George Acworth[1] refers without question to five daughters. It may be that as Elizabeth is married to George Acworth and is well established, her father does not mention her in his will but rather her son (his grandson) Richard.

Children of George and Elizabeth Acworth

Their first two children Richard and Frances were baptised at Winchester in 1565 and 1567. They left Winchenster in 1567 and by 1570 George was working for Archbishop Parker in Canterbury. This is probably where his third child Catherine was born, most likely in 1569.

The Acworth Pedigree[1][2] has four children for George. There is a Fraunce and another unknown daughter that marries Achilles Giffard. The Will of Achilles' brother John Giffard refers to his sister-in-law as "Frances Ackworthe of Kent". From this it seems that Fraunce was in fact Frances and these two daughters identified in the Acworth Pedigree are now merged as Frances Acworth who married Achilles Giffard. There is extensive Giffard Family history[4] available.
