1917 Feb 07- Enlisted as Private into the South African Expeditionary Forces. Reg Service No. 11414. Draft no. 46. Enlisted by staff Officer at no 8 Military District, Johannesburg, into the Ist Reserve Brigade/battalion of the South African Infantry, as witnessed by HM Davis. Regiment : 'C' Company 3rd SAI regiment and later 4th SAI. regiment.


(The infantry battalions were raised with men from the four provinces of the Union: the 1st Regiment troops were from the Cape; the 2nd Regiment from Natal and the Orange Free State; the 3rd Regiment was from Transvaal and Rhodesia. The 4th Regiment was rather different: it was the South African Scottish, raised from the Transvaal Scottish and the Cape Town Highlanders, and wearing the Atholl Murray tartan. An infantry depot was established at Potchefstroom.)

After his first wife, Alice BLUNDEN died, he married Jean who taught school in Johannesburg. Together they had two sons. The elder, Roland Marie, died on his bike while a schoolboy. The younger, Charles, is living in Pietermaritzburg, has 2 children, and his mother used to live with him. His daughters Denise and Merle say that he died in Benoni, Tvl, but Death Notice says Natal. (Brenthurst Clinic is in Transvaal however. Could be error on death notice.)
