About Charlotte Recess Cunningham
GEDCOM Note
RECESS'S GIVEN NAME WAS CHARLOTTE RECESS BUT ALL HER RECORDS LIST HER AS RECESS. She was known as "Cess" by the family. Recess would likely have been born just after slavery but was an infant at the time of emancipation. Was she possibly on the plantation of Littleberry Saunders where Aaron was once sent? Census records state shecould read and write!</line><line /><line>Recess was a good business woman and as told in the story, she owned a grocery store on the "Run" which she later sold to Jacob Cunningham. Jake ran the store with his two daughters, Ruth and Gladys. Ruth was very heavy and not well. Gladys later caught a cold which turned into pneumonia and she passed away. Some time after which, the store burned down and never rebuilt. </line><line /><line>See story. Cousin Ernie also mentioned that he thought one of the white Cunninghams either bought the land or gave the money for it. Thinks it was William Cunningham. I can’t confirm who this WILLIAM is. Did find s WILLIAM L from Virginia born 1815 who married a Nesbit in Belmont County. Maybe?</line><line /><line />
