No. 131189 Sergeant Christian Michael Adendorff (DOB 10.11.1897) -- volunteered & attested for service in the SA Engineer Corp (SAEC) at Loskop Dam on 21st May, 1940 at the age of 42. A carpenter by trade, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal on 20th September, 1940, attached to 33 Works Company SAEC at Barberton. He embarked for Kenya aboard the SS Llangibby Castle on 14th October, 1940, arriving in Nairobi a few days later. He remained with his unit until stricken with malaria and was admitted to hospital in Mombassa on 4th March, 1941. Released from hospital on 15th July, 1941, he rejoined his unit in the field. He embarked for the Union at Massawa on 6th October, 1941, arriving in Durban on 28th October, 1941. He was placed on strength of No. 3 Section Works Company Reserve on 8th December, 1941 & remained with them until found to be medically unfit. He was subsequently medicakky boarded and discharged on 28th September, 1943 at the age of 45 years. He qualified for War Medals, and listed his wife, Mrs AM Adendorff of 29 Krause Street, Bloemfontein as his next-of-kin.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When CM married in 1933 he was a widower, but no data yet on first wife, with whom he had at least 1 daughter. His estate papers contain a letter from a Mev. M.C. Malan [geb. Adendorff] in which she writes in 1970:- "....dit is al 5 jaar wat my pa begrawe is, en die boedel is nou nog nie af gehandel nie".

There was a reply saying that it had been completed in 1965, the year he died. Presumably, his son from 2nd marriage did not bother to make contact with his step-sister. You will see that she refers to a lawyer, who was obviously a liar, because if the estate had been wound up, he was charging for his services under false pretentions by saying that "there are still some papers missing....." etc.
