About Christian Johnson

No evidence to support a maiden name of Taliaferro and it does not seem likely she was the daughter of Robert "the immigrant" Taliaferro

Andrew Bourne, the father of Peter, John and Robert, died by 1700 in Richmond County, leaving his wife Christian. She remarried, this time to Henry Johnson, who already had a family of his own. When Christian died, she left a will naming her sons: John, Robert and Peter. (Essex County Deeds & Wills, 1711-1714, p. 152) There was no mention of Thomas Schooler or a daughter who could have married him

2 Oct 1700 (Richmond Co.,VA Court Orders) "Administration is granted to Christian Johnson upon all & singular the Estate of Andrew Bourne deced during the minorities of Peter Bourne". [Note: It is known that Peter Bourne was son of Christian who appears earlier in Richmond County records as Christian Bourne. This administration appointment strongly implies that she had been the wife of Andrew Bourne whose last appearance in records had been in Oct. 1695. (Richmond Co.,VA Court Orders 2 Oct 1695, will of Edward Price proved by John and Andrew Bourne.)]. Widow, Christian Johnson, appointed administrator of estate 2 Oct 1700. [Richmond Co. VA Court Order 2 Oct 17]: "Ordered that Mr. Richard Shippie, Mr. John Fisaker, Walter Francis or any two of them some time between this and the next Court held do meet and do inventory & appraise all & singular the estate of Andrew Bourne deced." The date of birth is based solely on the estimated date of birth of his son. It could be earlier but not much later.

[edit] ▼ Notes Ann Johnson's father Henry signed an intention to marry in July 1695 in Essex Co. (He was a widower, and he was marrying John Bourne's mother, Christian [surname unknown]. His first wife was Mary Taliaferro, d/o Robert.) Henry gave his 4 daughters personal property, and named his daughters starting with the oldest Elizabeth (my ancestor). Sarah was 2nd, Katherine 3rd, and Ann was the 4th and youngest. Henry's will was dated Oct 1702 and proved June 1703, Essex. In his will, Henry also listed the order of birth for his children. In Essex Co orphans book May 1707 the 3 minor children chose different Taliaferros as guardian. Ann Johnson chose John Taliaferro. (It was John who gave Ann Christopher, wife of John, and her James children a gift of property).

Charles Taliaferro and Richard Johnson security for Peter Bourn, exec. of Christian Johnson estate". Earliest indication of marriage to Henry Johnson was the appointment of Christian Johnson as administrator of the estate of her former husband, Andrew Bourne. No children her second marriage.

When Peter Bourne of Essex County died, Charles Taliaferro was executor of the estate. He and Thomas Schooler and William Smith presented the last will and testament to the court on October 18, 1720, and made the necessary oath regarding its authenticity. (Court Order Book 1716-1723, p. 517) The will was proved on November 15, and Thomas Schooler was an heir. He received “four shay and 1 two year old Hiefor.” (Will Book 2, 1717-1721, pp. 218-219) Peter also mentioned his brothers John and Robert, and his half brother Richard Johnson.

What was the relationship of Thomas Schooler? Several researchers, including this writer, have assumed that Thomas Schooler married a Bourne. However, further research does not support this conclusion. 152) There was no mention of Thomas Schooler or a daughter who could have married him. Henry Johnson had died in 1703, and his will named his four children: Richard, Sarah, Katherine and Anne, “and my wife.” (DB 11, p. 27) Again, no mention of Thomas Schooler. Therefore, we are left to wonder why Thomas was mentioned in the will of Peter Bourne. Perhaps they were just good friends.
