Because the name 'Rosevelt' is a geographical name near Tholen(Zeeland/Netherlands) where he's born, I doubt the origin of his father would be 'Haarlem'. http://www.rooseveltoudvossemeer.nl/de-roosevelts/de-zeeuwse-roots-... Maybe someone assumed that the area 'Harlem" had something to do with his place of origin ????

The name Maerten in the New World may originate from Marinus or Marijnus, the son of Pieter Joris ( Marinus van Rosevelt ) . Then Claes Maertensen Rooselvelt would be the grandson of Pieter Jorisz op 't Rosevelt, which is assumed to be the Founding Father of the american Roosevelt-family ,assumed by the Roosevelt-descendants themselves).

He departed from Oud-Vossemeer (Tholen/Zeeland) in 1637 or 1647

More Claes Martenszen VanRosenvelt 1623 - 1658 Born: Tholen, Tholen, Zeeland, Netherlands Died: New Amsterdam, New York, United States

Claes Martenzen van Rosenvelt arrived in New Netherlands, now New York, in 1649 or1650, undoubtedly bringing with him his wife, Jannetje Samuel-Thomas. (In the Dutch surnames, "van" means "from", and the next word is the name of the place, therefore "Rosenvelt" indicated a certain village in Zeeland, Holland, from whence they came. "Claes" is Dutch for "Nicholas". The middle name, written on records, "Martenzen", signified that his father's given name was Marten. The spelling of the surname was soon changed to Roosevelt and the "van" omitted. Roosevelt or Rosenvelt means "field of roses".
Above is stated that 'van' only means 'from' and that is beyond the truth, one could have possesed an estate or grounds which often was combined with the name, although lived somewhere els !!! And maybe the forfoather named themselves after a place although the descendants never lived there etc.Rosenvelt wasn't a village,in this "polder" were just 2 farms built. (remark by: RvO)
