Clara / Gelle Victor's witness at her wedding is stated to be her mother Hendrikje Levie. Indications are that Hendrikje raised Klaartje (Clara) from infancy, so was regarded as the mother, but that Vrouwtje (Hendrikje's younger sister) was the biological mother who died shortly after Clara's birth.

If this was indeed the case then surely one of Klara's daughters would have been named after Vrouwtje. (by rvk)
(EWF replies:) Klara's daughters were not named after Hendrikje either. Daughter #1 was named after Hendel Nathan, Hartog's mother. Daughter #3 was named after Meitje Nathan, Hendel's younger sister. Daughter #2, "Pes / Betje" was plausibly named after Hendel's older sister whose name is otherwise unknown.

Then please explain why Clara was called Victor if her father was Asser Simon (and was still living when Clara married)? Asser Simon Zuckerle‏‎
(EWF replies:) Because Vrouwtje's marriage fell apart and had no children, so Vrouwtje did a completely different thing. But Hendrikje's marriage to Samuel Charlevil was stable (http://dutchjewry.org/genealogy/ashkenazi/4832.shtml) and there certainly could be no "Victor" in Hendrikje's marriage. Furthermore, on the page I cite, observe that Hendrikje lost a child on "10 Teveth 5521" (jewish calendar, converts to 17-December-1760), probably a stillbirth, so that she could not physically have carried Clara to term in 1761.

Clara Victor was injected, from outside, into Hendrikje's stable family. From where could she have come? Clearly from Hendrikje's younger sister, her only sister, who died when Clara was just 1yo. This is not just obvious, it is glaringly obvious.
