Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Richmond-4909

John was a younger son of Edmond Richmond alias Webb and Katherine St John of Rodbourne Cheney, Wiltshire.[1][2][3][4]

John was presumably born at Rodbourne, Cheney, Wiltshire.

John Richmond alias Webbe was the heir to the lands at Wroughon, Wiltshire, held by his brother Oliver who died around 1635.[5]

Oliver's Inquisition Post Mortem of 18 Aug, 11 Charles I [1635][5] stated that "John Richmond alias Webbe is his brother and next heir, and was then aged 40 years and more." This could suggest John was born c 1394 but it is likely to be an estimate. Based on Oliver being born c 1381/2 and John as the next surviving brother (with others to follow) John's year of birth appears likely to have been in the period 1383-1393.

Oliver's Inquisition Post Mortem[5] also noted an Indenture dated 10th April, 10 Charles I [1634], made between himself, by the name of Oliver Webbe alias Richmond, of the one part, and William Digges, gent., Edward Nicholas, gent., Benedict Browne, gent., and William Sadler, gent., of the other part. The Indenture referred to Edward Richmond alias Webbe, son and heir apparent of John Richmond alias Webbe, brother of the said Oliver, and of Elizabeth Nicholas his former wife.

In the will of his mother Katherine Richmond alias Webb of Rodboune Cheney, Wiltshire, the will dated 04 Feb 1634/1635 and proved 08 May 1635, the Testatrix made bequests as follows:[6][7]

  • To her son John Webb the tableboard, three cupboards, three chairs and eleven stooles and the form and bench, and six cushions and carpet in my parlour and there commonly used, and my wedding ring.
  • To my grandchild Edward Webb, son of John Webb, that £20 his father oweth me and my silver bowl with the St. John arms on it, given me by my sister.
  • To daughter in law, my son John Webb's wife, 20s for a ring
  • To all my son John Webb's ..... children 10s apiece for rings

Marriages

His first wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Nicholas of All Cannings, Wiltshire.[1][2][3][4][5]

His second wife was Elizabeth Philipps.[4]

H I Richman, citing Harl. 6831 f. 130, indicated that Elizabeth was a daughter of Sir ? Philipps of Picton, Pembroke, Bt., and that she was the widow of 'Meddop'[4] HOP indicates she may have been a daughter of Sir John Philipps Bt of Picton and had married Edward Medhope, clerk of the House of Commons in Ireland.[8] An Elizabeth has been listed as a daughter of Sir John Philipps[9] but her husband was not named.

Death and Will

His will was dated 6 May 1641 and proved 9 Dec 1641. The Inventory recorded that he had died 05 [possibly November] 1641.[12]

Transcript of the will by H I Richmond:[4] John Webb of Rodborne Cheney, Wilts. To my loving wife Elizabeth all my goods and chattles, etc., and my lands both in England and Ireland, upon trust that out of my debts and dues she will discharge and free Wm. Sly of Rodborne, my tenants, from all manner of bonds and bills which they stand engaged to any persons with and for me. The overplus to be divided amongst my children that I had by my said wife Eliz., whom I make sole ex'trix. JOHN WEBBE. Witness : Thos. Hodges. Proved by Edward Richmond alias Webb, the son, 9 Dec. 1641.

The day before the will was proved, Elizabeth assigned her executorship and interests in the estate to her step-son, Edward Richmond alias Webb.

Research Notes

John's first marriage may or may not be that recorded on 27 January 1611/12 at Saint Gregory by Saint Paul, London.[13] An image of the original parish register unfortunately does not give much additional information (it says they were married "by license from the 'something I can't read but is a common word', maybe 'families?' "as opposed to "by bannes") but it does show that the date was 27 Jan 1611/12 (not 1610/11).[14]

NB There is an entry in the Bishop's Transcripts for Rodbourne Cheney, Wiltshire, of the burial of a John Webb, gent, on June 25th. Unfortunately there was no year recorded on that particular return and the return could be for any year between 1626 and 1654.[15]
