About Daniel Jacobus van Graan
Having been born in the Western Cape Province at Tulbach Daniel's family moved to the Transvaal, when he was 8, to the farm Witstinkhoutboom, along the Mooirivier, near Potchefstroom. After the Annexation of the Transvaal in 1877. The local farmers grew increasingly dissatisfied. The 1st war of Independence broke out in 1880. His bravery was exceptional and he sustained 3 wounds, with one bullet passing between his heart and his stomach, and through his body.
Field Cornet Daniel Jacobus Van Graan married Francina Botha in 28th September 1881.Her family farmed on the otherside of the Mooi Rivier on the farm Koloniesplaas.
By the end of the second war of independence when peace was declared on the 30th May 1902. Francina had been on the run with her family for 1 year and 11 months. During this time on the 19th June 1900 the farm Witstinkhoutboom was confiscated and then burned on the 4 of July 1900.
Daniel was wounded on the 24 October 1900
In 1906 they left the farm Witstinkhoutboom to move to Witrand. Where after about a year he had surgery to remove a bullet in his head, that left him hemiplegic.
In 1922 they bought the beautiful farm "Roseneath Park"about 6 kilometers from Lawley station.
