About Francina Petronella Wilhelmina van Graan, b5c9d1e6f4g1
Francina supplied the commandos with whatever she could, while her husband was in the field fighting for the Boers in the Second Boer War (War of Independence).
On the 19th June 1900 their farm Witstinkhoutboom, alongside the Mooi River just outside Potchefstroom, was confiscated on the the 4th July 1900 the farm was burnt. to the ground.
Francina, having been driven off the farm, was on the run for a period of 23 months, with her 7 children, in a cart, & two mules, but evaded capture by the British and remained free to the end (unlike her daughter Hestira who ended up in a concentration camp with her Aunt Momsen). Francina herself was shot in the leg and proudly showed the bad leg to her grandchildren later.. The story of this time was written up by Trienie Meij in the book called "Diep Waters" in 1935. Reprinted in 2001 by Corrie de Koker (nee van Graan) After the war the family grew to 12 children and they all had to help in the home. In her old age she lived with her daughter Hestira, in Krugersdorp, where she died aged 94.'''
