About Daniel Litscho

  • Daniel Litscho "Daniel Litschoe, sergeant in the service of the West India Company, was stationed at Parahyba, Brazil, when, about 1646, he married Anna Claes Croesens, the young widow of Jan Jansen Swaartveger. She had a little son, Hermanus, then three years old. the boy was born in the neighboring province of Rio Grande do Norte (Natal), at the "Castel" or fort. Swaarrtveger, undoubtedly, was also a soldier.

Daniel must have been transferred to New Amsterdam soon after his marriage, for his only child, Anna, was baptised there, June 6, 1647 (Baptisms in Dutch Ch..,NY). Daniel was still in the Company's employ, but in the ensuing March, he is found among the tavern-keepeers of the town.... He kept an orderly tavern until his death, which occurred between Dec 6, 1661 & April 6, 1662, when his widow was required to file an inventory of his property.

Their daughter, Anna, married William Peartree, who was the mayor of the city in 1701-1707." (car)

Public official. Born in Koszalin, Poland. Sergeant and later lieutenant of the Dutch colonial army under Admiral Christopher Arciszewski in Brazil. In 1651 took part in Stuyvesant's expedition against the Swedes on the Delaware. In 1652 commanded a detachment of soldiers who accompanied the governor up the Hudson and hauled down the flag of patroon in Reussclaerswyck, thereby freeing the nucleus of the present city of Albany from feudal jurisdiction.

Became one of the most prominent citizens of New Amsterdam, and often took part in the deliberations of the council. In 1652, when New Hollanders, fearing an attack of the New Englanders, began feverishly to fortify their city, he contributed one hundred guilders towards its defense; acted also as city fire inspector. About 1648 founded a tavern, which was one of the important landmarks in the town. Died in 1662.

He was a lieutenant of Peter Stuyvesant.

He participated in Peter Stuyvesant’s expedition against the Swedes on the Delaware River that deposed the Autocratic Van Slechtenhorst, the patroon of Rensselaerswyck, freeing this settlement from feudal domination. It is said that it was to honor King of Poland, John Casimir (Jan Kazimierz) – who at the time was fighting King of Sweden, Charles X Gustav of Sweden – one of the forts defending new Amsterdam bore the name of Casimir.

Litscho, in addition, was a prominent citizen of New Amsterdam. He owned a tavern that was an important landmark in the social life of the community and he was an influential burgher on the Council of Burgomasters and Schepens. He later for many years entertained at "Mother Litsco's Tavern" on lower Pearl Street near the Brooklyn ferry.

In his later life he was appointed the colony’s fire-inspector, a position he held until shortly before his death. A wealthy man when he died in 1662, Litscho left a sizeable estate to his family
