About David Skillman Bumgardner
David Skillman Bumgardner was born 20 December 1846 and died in August, 1909. He served in the Civil War as a member of the 44th Infantry and the 8th Ohio Cavalry. At an early age he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church of Catawba, Ohio, and was a member for many years. He filled all the important offices in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. For a time he was Clerk of Pleasant Township, and because of his exceptional ability in penmanship and mathematics, was noted for the fine appearance and accuracy of his books and records. Unusual mechanical skill and artistry made him an outstanding workman in woods and metals. He was a man of dependability; an intelligent, honest and loyal American citizen; and a true Christian gentleman.
His first wife was Susan Ward, whom he married 5 June 1870. Two sons were born: Ward Lynch and Clifford H. Susan Ward was the daughter of Josiah and Rebecca Ward and was born in 1838. She died in 1889. Both David and Susan are buried in Asbury Cemetery, Clark County, Ohio.
David C. Bumgardner 's second wife was Ida Thornberg, and to this marriage one son, Ray, was born.
