Biographical Sketch:
DAVID DUNHAM [Sr.] was born 10 March 1673/74 in Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey. He was the son of Jonathan Singletary and Mary Bloomfield.
David, and his brother, Jonathan, Jr., were mentioned in the will of their uncle Thomas Bloomfield, Jr. In this wIll David was called "cousin David Dunham, son of brother-in-law Jonathan Dunham." (NJ Archives 21:43-4)
David and his father, Jonathan, were on the coroner's jury in 1695-6 to determine the cause of death of Ebenezer Ford, which was decided "by natural causes." (N.J.Arch., 23:168-9)
David was indicted for having an illegitimate child in the September, 1697. The jury found him guilty and the court ordered him to pay five pounds, to be carried to the whipping post and receive ten lashes on his bare back, and pay two shillings every week for seven weeks for the support of the child. At the same court another woman also charged him with the same offence (sic) and the court ordered the same punishment. Since he did not carry out the order of the court, the sheriff was ordered to compel him to do so a year in jail.
He must have tried to changed his ways as he was a practicing member of the Church of Christ in 1697. David married Mary Ilsley in New York City on the 16 or 18 of August 1699.
They had eight children during their marriage, including 3 sons born in Woodbridge, New Jersey:
Joseph Dunham David Dunham Daniel Dunham Yet, in 1708, Thomas Pike complained that David was detaining the daughter of William Ellison, deceased. The court compelled him to turn her over to Mr. Pike as Executor of Ellison's estate. (See Block book for discuss of "detain".)
David was a militiaman in the Fifth Company of Col. Thomas Farmer's regiment of NJ Militia in 1715.
Jonathan Dunham and John Moores were neighbors of David. On December 19, 1716, John Moores of Woodbridge made his will and mentioned "6 acres adjoining bought of Jonathan Dunham, 19 acres adjoining David Dunham." (NJ Archives, 23:326).
David Dunham, David Dunham, Jr., Joseph Dunham, Jonathan Dunham, Jonathan Dunham, Jr., were on the list of freeholders of Middlesex County, NJ, Woodbridge in 1750. He died there between 1750 and 1757 in his hometown, having lived a long life into his 70s.
