About David Moodie

David's second wife Eliza is though to have been his housekeeper before they married. They lived at 57 South Portland Street, the Gorbals, Glascow before emigrating to Australia with his son Edmond, from his first marriage. His first son David John wold have been 22 at that stage, Edmund 18, only just reaching adulthood.
They sailed from Gravesens on August 11, 1863 on the Fiery Star. Their first child James William Yule was born at sea on September 15, north north-east of Rio de Janiero, a month into the journey.
David, Eliza, Edmond, David's brother John and baby James reached Brisbane on November 20, 1863, where they lived firstly maybe in George Street, then in Gregory Terrace, Their second son together, George Coutts, was born there (March 23, 1866).
They moved to Mary Street, Gympie, where David Coutts was born on January 31, 1969.
David worked in his trade as a joiner and cabinet maker,
They worshipped at the Presbyterian church (the site of the Uniting Church, Red Hill. David designed, built and installed the pulpit when the church was rebuilt (after being struck by lightning). It was planned to be incorporated into the present church but somehow did not fit. It was given to the Tin Can Bay Community Church, which later sold it to a private buyer.
David contracted tuberculosis and after a 12-month illness died on December 13, 1873, leaving Eliza to raise three sons, then aged 10, 7, and 5 (Edmond being an adult by this time),
David died intestate, causing legal problems. His estate was less than 100 pounds.
The electoral roll shows Edmund residing at Mary Street, so it appears he supported his stepmother and brothers.
