Disputed Origins

David Sage

Birth: 1639 Immediate Family: Son of John Sage and Elizabeth Sage Husband of Mary Sage; Elizabeth Sage and Mary Sage Father of Nathaniel Sage; Mercy Sage; David SAGE; Elizabeth Bull; John Sage and 3 others Death: March 31, 1703 (64) Middlesex, CT Place of Burial:Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex, CT, USA

Genealogical Record of the Descendants of David Sage, Sage and Sage (1919), believed that he was son of Elizabeth Randall, that she was widow of John Kirby, and step mother of David's wife Elizabeth Kirby, based on David's will mentioning land "I bought of mother" and land "sold to his mother, Elizabeth Randall."[1]

Others, without source, have claimed that this Elizabeth Randall was first or earlier married to a John Sage who was father of the immigrant David. But there is no documentation to support this. As a result, we have detached David from these parents. And detached John Sage from the known Elizabeth Randall. But in other deeds, David referred to his father John Kirby and to his mother Elizabeth Kirby, alias Randall. This led later researchers to believe that David was referring to his in-laws-- parents of his wife Elizabeth Kirby, and that Elizabeth (Randall) Kirby was ONLY his mother-in-law, not his birth mother.[2]

Biography

He married second Mary Wiley about 1671; she was born 8 Feb 1647/9 in Watertown, Mass, daughter of John Wiley and Elizabeth Clough.[3] She died in Middletown 7 Dec 1711[4]

"David Sage did not marry Mary Wilcox, daughter of John Wilcox... The estate papers of Mercy Sage (daughter of David and Mary Sage), found in the Hartford (Conn.) Probate District, File no. 4704, 1711/12, reveal the following..." that she had an uncle Timothy Wily, at whose whom she apparently died.[5] Also, Mary Wilcox, dau of John, married Benjamin Hand of Guilford and died 7 Sep 1711.[6] He died 31 March 1702/3 in Middletown, Conn.[7] and is burired in the old Riverside cemetery[8] He is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, CT.[9]

not sure these notes are entirely correct - the Elisha Sage book identifies "Elizabeth Randall Sage" as his mother in law, not mother.

  • David Sage was born in Whales, UK 1639 to John and Elizabeth (-----) Sage. . He emigrated as a youth with his mother Elizabeth, being one of the first settlers to Middletown, CT Circa 1652 . She became widowed in the process of emigrating to America circa 1652, and married John Kirby shortly after arriving. David remained under the care of Elizabeth and his step father John Kirby until 1664 when he attained majority or 25 years of age. In Feb 1664 he married his step sister Elizabeth Kirby daughter of John and Elizabeth Kirby, John Kirby's 2nd wife.

They had four children: David, 1665; John 1668; Elizabeth, 1670; and Mary, 1672.

His wife Elizabeth then dying he married,1673, Mary Wilcox. To them were born Jonathan, 1674; Timothy, 1678; Nathaniel and Marcy, 1680.

The following data from Savage’s "GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF NEW ENGLAND," v. 4, p. 4, differs from the other source, "Commemorative Biographical Record of Middlesex County, Connecticut, (1903):
