Richard Clarence (Dick) Clark, a Senator from Iowa; born in Paris, Linn County, Iowa, September 14, 1928; attended the public schools; attended the University of Maryland, Wiesbaden, Germany, and the University of Frankfort, Germany 1951-1952; served in the United States Army 1950-1952; graduated from Upper Iowa University, Fayette 1953; completed graduate work at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 1959; professor of history and political science 1959-1964; administrative assistant to United States Representative John C. Culver 1965-1972; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1972 and served from January 3, 1973, to January 3, 1979; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1978; appointed by President Jimmy Carter to be Ambassador at Large and United States Coordinator for Refugee Affairs 1979; senior fellow and director of Congressional Program at the Aspen Institute1980-; is a resident of Washington, D.C.
