Doeke Martena loses power in Revolt 
 1530 - 1605 
 First Admiral of the Sea Beggars in Friesland 
Doeke Martena is admiral of the Beggars on the Zuiderzee.  Latin poet as he is able to read the Bible, which still has not been translated, and to criticize the Catholic faith.  Doeke or Duco Martena is the last male descendant of an ancient race whose ancestral home Martena State (photo below), was Cornjum.  Doeke is a member of the States General.

Martena Cornjum In the forest at Cornjum, north of Leeuwarden, carry impressive avenues to the estate Martena State. Martena State is a ruin in the early 20th century. But the ancient noble house where once lived the admiral of Friesland, is very beautifully restored.

Doeke of Martena has a hard life.  His father, Tjebbe of Martena, dies at his birth in Martena State in 1530. His mother, Bauck of Heringastate, then marries Syds of Botnia.  At seventeen dies his mother. 
 The coat of arms of Martena shared: 1.   gold half eagle black, coming from the dividing line;  2. Sections: In a blue lily of gold, red b in a leafy head of gold, the stem down.  ( Source )

 A slightly damaged painting by Doeke Martena hangs in the provincial museum in Leeuwarden. 
Doeke of Martena marries Swob of Botnia, a sister of his stepfather.  Their first son died young.  His wife dies young.  In 1554, he is 23 or 24 years, he is a member of the Frisian States. 
 Doeke is 38 years when the Eighty Years' War begins.  He is married to Tryn Unema.  His son, Jan, also a freedom fighter at heart, died in 1584. 
Doeke is a go-getter.  His origins and his marriage are additionally guarantees a rapid career.  The Martena family owns many houses in the Frisian towns.  One is the Martena Stins (right) in Franeker, the future hall of Franekeradeel.  The building is probably a museum. 
 Doeke is a member of the Provincial Council of Friesland.  In 1564 he joined the Executive Council.  He strongly oppose the rigors of Alva and the governor Casper de Robles .  On Martena State he holds secret meetings.  When Alva is coming should he flee too. 
 Doeke of Martena is an important link between William of Orange and the Frisian exiles in Emden.  Among the exiles is Karel Roorda, who wants an independent Friesland.  Roorda is diametrically opposed to William Louis of Nassau, Friesland looks more like one of the Netherlands province.  (Source: J Bekkema)

The Beggars get after four years of struggle at sea foothold ashore in Brielle in 1572. Doeke of Martena immediately makes plans to take in Friesland.  Biggest obstacle is the strong blockhouse Leeuwarden.

Battle on the Zuiderzee

Blankerhoff paints in 1663 started on the Zuiderzee in 1573 which partly by Admiral Doeke Martens a success for the Beggars.  The Beggars are definitely the boss at sea along the coast of the Low Countries. 
First admiral of Friesland 
 William of Orange appointed Doeke in 1573 to the first admiral of Friesland.  But Friesland is not liberated yet.  Robles has his fleet in the harbor of Harlingen.  During the Battle of the Zuiderzee between the Beggars led by Cornelis Dirks of Monnickendam and the Spaniards, under Bossu, Doeke of Martena maintains the fleet of Robles in check by reason of the Vlie.  The battle lasts six days and nights. 
 After the Beggars Zeeland and Holland liberate it becomes quiet in Friesland.  Only in 1576 something happens.  The poorly paid army of the Spanish commander's Robles refused service.  Spain is bankrupt.  The mutinous soldiers take prisoners Robles. 
 The opposition flourishes everywhere, even in Friesland.  The Court of Friesland no longer functions and the bishop is deposited.  The dreaded wooden houses disappear.  The Frisians buy the right to allow only now Frisians to the Court of Friesland.  Leeuwarden, together with ten smaller towns for money and the capital will have an important trump card. 
The granddaughter of Doeke, Catherine Entens deceased in 1660, Martena State brings in marriage to Sjuck of Burmania, Grietman of Wymbritseradeel (deceased 20 June 1650).  Their third son of Laes Burmania then live in the state.  In this branch, the State proceeded in a straight line from father to son.  (Source: Tresoar )  
Refugees get key positions in the new administration Frisian being radical.  The board will initially freedom of religion, as William of Orange stands.  On August 13, 1578 the first Protestant sermon is held in Leeuwarden.  Yet the Roman Catholic religion is one and a half year (March 3, 1580) later banned.  Monasteries are closed, repurposing, or even demolished.  The Catholic church that was once so powerful falls away.

Martena Stins Franeker

In 1580 he manages to capture the Spaniards Doeke Martena.  William of Orange offers to ransom but the enemy refused the money. 
Only when the Beggars get their hands on a number of hostages, they agree to a prisoner exchange.  After almost one year imprisonment comes Doeke Martena free, in exchange for three Spanish-minded 'compatriots'.

 Doeke of Martena sacrificed almost his entire fortune on the freedom struggle.  The Frisian States have never paid a portion of his salary.  The former admiral is poor. 
In 1603 dies his wife Tryn and two years later, on November 11, he dies himself at the age of 75.  Doeke buried in the Galilierëkerk (or Galileerkerk) in Leeuwarden.  Two of his six children still live.  Swob Bauck and two daughters continue the family of Martena.
