About Douglas Allen Sletmoen

Douglas was born at home on the Reep Farm north of Audubon, Mn. It was a hot summer day and I was sent off to stay at Charlie Motts place during the delivery. The Mott family lived about 1/2 mile away and as was the case we didn't have a car that would run so I was taken over there by team and wagon.

At that time we had a small town country Dr. named G.G. Height and he had a small office above the Orstad Store on main street in Audubon. I recall we had the old time wall crank type phones in those days and a central operator had to make your conections. When Dad rang the operator to get notice to Dr. Height, the line was full of rubber neckers who listened in to get the news. The operator had to call the Dr. as she always knew where all emergency personnel were at any given time. I was allowed to come home from the neighbors the next day to greet my little red haired brother.

Since I was about five years older than Doug. it was never a fair fight and we practiced frequently. Mom or Dad would have to step in to protect Doug as he would never give up.

We had grandma Fagerlie living with us at the time and she really took to Doug. He was her little man and she rocked him to sleep on a regular basis. She died in 1940, so Doug was about three years old then. That is when I really got the upper hand, Ha!

When Gene was born, both Doug and I were sent out to Glen Ullen, No. Dak. by train to give Mom a chance to rest up and get some relief from her two scrapping boys.

Dads sister Crystal was living out there with her family on a big sheep ranch. One day when we were staying with her, Doug and I went up the dirt road a short distance and we came across a rattle snake in the road. We got aunt Crystal to come with us and she had a rake to kill the snake. She had already warned us about rattle snakes in the area.

I tried to get Doug to snap its head off like we did with garter snakes back home but he was to smart for that trick.

Like most brothers, we grew up testing each other and finally accepted the fact that we each had a right to be alive.

Doug. remainded home on the farm to help Dad build his dairy herd while he attended college in Moorhead. He got his BA degree in education and took a job teaching math in Montana and then in Bemiji, Mn. before transferring to Detroit Lakes where he retired from teaching after 30 years.

Doug and Judi have two girls they put through college and they have two grandsons.

Doug has a hobby farm and enjoys his home on Big Cormorant Lake.

Douglas went to meet the Lord on February 17, 2016 while in medical care for Alzheimers in Tucson , Arizona Services were held in Tucson for the immediate family and internment will be later in the spring due to frozen ground. He will be laid to rest in the Audubon Lutheran Church Cemetery where he was Cemetery Manager for many years. Ole and Minna Sletmoen, Orville and Alpha Sletmoen and now Douglas well be buried there. It is on a beautiful hill South and West of the village with a full view of the Village and the Sletmoen Farm site.
