arl L. Kiner, Jr., 96, of Cavalier, ND passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier,

ND Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cavalier Baptist Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Faith in Action.

He was born in Miami, Florida as the second son to Earl L. Kiner, Sr. and Velma (Stebbins) Kiner, on December 17, 1920. His early years were spent near Marseilles, Illinois until the family moved to the Joliette, ND area in 1931. In 1939, he graduated from Pembina High School and soon thereafter began his farming career. He married the love of his life, Fern Lien, from Tolna, ND on April 18, 1946. They farmed and raised their family on a farm east of Hamilton until moving to Cavalier in 1974. Earl was probably born with dirt under his fingernails since his passion in life was planting and growing things including the raising of livestock in his earlier years. In addition to farming, tending his yard, and gardening, he enjoyed reading the Bible and nurturing his faith.

He felt blessed that they had the opportunity to spend 21 winters in Florida after retirement. As recently as last summer he would probably be found in the garden at Country Estates when he wasn’t visiting Wedgewood Manor, supporting his wife of over 70 years. In recent years, his devotion to her and his faith continued to increase, which was readily evident to all.

He is survived by his wife, Fern, three children, Keith (Shirley) Kiner of Fort Myers Beach, FL, Kerry (Gary) Gauffin of Mora, MN, Nicki Kiner of Albuquerque, NM, a brother, C.R.(Ray) Kiner from Mountlake Terrace, WA as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and his older brother J.P. (Phil) Kiner, formerly from Pembina, ND.
