About Edward de Bermingham, 20th Lord Athenry
Edward, 20th Lord of Athenry. From the Act of Restoration in the name of his father, was granted 5000 acres in the Barony of Dunmore in September 1680. In 1689 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the County of Mayo. Sided, like all the principle gentlemen in County Galway, with King James II against William of Orange, and served as captain in Richard, Earl of Clanrickarde's regiment of infantry in the army of the King. He was outlawed in the County of Dublin on 11 May 1691 by authority of King William III, and soon thereafter surrendered the garrison and Island of Bophin. Nevertheless, on 10 July 1698 he obtained a reversal from the King's Bench of his 1694 attainder, and a full pardon on 5 June 1799. Edward died May 1709 and was interred in Athenry.
